Job summary

WVUH West Virginia University Hospitals seeks a Transport Specialist to support the patient care team and safely move patients and items across campus. Role includes transporting patients to testing areas and handling equipment, with emphasis on safety and communication with nursing staff.

Core duties require attention to patient condition during transport, oxygen handling, and adherence to dispatch system guidelines. Evening shifts and 40 hours per week are standard.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
• HeartSaver First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.
• Background check as required by WV regulations.

Responsibilities

• Escort patients or items to appropriate departments within WVUH campuses.
• Greet patients, identify self, and assist in preparing for transport.
• Monitor patient devices during transport and respond to emergencies.
• Transport patients with oxygen, including handling and storage.
• Observe and report patient concerns to the RN during transport.
• Communicate patient return to the RN promptly.
• Disinfect wheelchairs and stretchers after use.
• Assist with discharge transport of patient and belongings.
• Transport patients and items across WVUH campus safely.
• Use the patient transport dispatch system per department guidelines.
• Maintain oxygen tank levels daily.
• Position wheelchairs and stretchers back to origin.

This role is a position providing support to the patient care team as well as directly attending to certain, specified needs of the patient. This position performs the transportation of patients to and from testing areas and other areas as needed. This position also transports various items throughout the facility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.Obtain certification in HeartSaver First Aid within 30 days of hire date.

1. West Virginia state criminal background check required, and Federal, if applicable, for DHHR BMS regulated area.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Escortspatients or items safely to the appropriate departments in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Skilled Nursing Facility, Physician Office Center, Cancer Center and Health Sciences Center.

2. Courteously greets patients, identifies self, and then assists in preparing the patient for transport from the department.

3. Monitors the integrity of patient’s monitoring and invasive devices at all times during transport, and intervenes in emergency situations to ensure patient safety.

4. Responsible for transporting patients with oxygen, including handling and storage of oxygen.

5. Observes and reports to the RN all patient concerns or changes in condition while in transport.

6. Promptly communicates return of patient to the RN.

7. Disinfects wheelchairs and stretchers, after each use.

8. Upon discharge, identifies and safely assists with the transport of patient and patient’s possessions to discharge vehicles.

9. Transportspatients and items to and from all areas of the WVUH Campus in a safe and timely manner.

10. Must be able to use the patient transport dispatching system according to the guidelines set up by the Department Manager.

11. Maintains proper oxygen tank levels on each unit daily

12. Positions wheelchairs and stretchers back to place of origin.

1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends minimizing the need for employees to manually lift patients, and limit safe patient handling to 35 pounds. All transfers, lifts and re-positioning will be completed utilizing the lift equipment and/or other patient handling aids as indicated by the patient’s profile and appropriate algorithms.

2. Heavy/Hard work:Work requires strength and/or stamina for lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and walking for long periods of time. Handling of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Pushing/pulling carts weighing up to 200 pounds.
