Job summary

Peabody Energy's Shoal Creek Mine in Oakman, Alabama, is seeking a Longwall Maintenance Supervisor to lead the underground maintenance team on the longwall and related equipment. You will plan, direct, and supervise maintenance work, ensure safety compliance, manage inventory, and drive short- and long-term maintenance planning under the Maintenance Manager.

Required: high school diploma or GED, trade certifications, 2 years' experience with heavy diesel equipment, and knowledge of mining

Overview

We are currently seeking a Longwall Maintenance Supervisor to join our Production team at our Shoal Creek Mine, located in Oakman, Alabama. Shoal Creek Mine is one of the deepest underground coal mines in the United States, producing high-quality met coal. With nine‑foot‑tall workings, a brand‑new longwall, and 15+ years of projected coal reserves, the site is an ideal place to work. The area offers rivers, lakes, rolling hills, and is about an hour from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.

Responsibilities
  • Visibly support and champion Peabody’s Missions and Values.
  • Act in accordance with and adhere to Safety as a Way of Life Management System.
  • Plan, direct and lead the work of a crew or team.
  • Supervise maintenance and repair personnel by providing technical counsel and advice, answering questions on methods or materials, and checking workmanship for safety compliance.
  • Prepare and submit accurate and timely maintenance records.
  • Under the direction of Maintenance Manager, implement short‑term and long‑term maintenance planning, scheduling, and forecasting.
  • Assist the Maintenance Manager in the periodic review of maintenance and repair reports.
  • Provide input into analyzing costs for potential improvements.
  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining the proper flow of parts and inventory.
  • Analyze failed components for failure reasons and implement changes to reduce future failures.
  • Keep Maintenance Manager and/or Mine Management advised of work progress, job completions, and results.
  • Evaluate the efforts of the workforce and train them in areas of weakness.
  • Keep abreast of latest maintenance methods and equipment through technical publications and vendor representatives.
  • Monitor maintenance employee work performance and operating conditions to prevent accidents consistent with safety objectives and regulations.
  • Make recommendations for equipment changes or replacements.
  • Supervise equipment change/upgrade efforts and any replacement/relocation activities.
  • Ensure activities comply with safety, environmental, and statutory requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned by the company.
Qualifications
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Trade certification(s) required.
  • Must be self‑motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to positively influence others who may not report directly to the position.
  • Two (2) years of experience maintaining heavy diesel equipment required.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal mining regulations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
Physical Requirements – Underground Environment
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Ability to sit for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time, moving through mine sections with varying clearance and headroom.
  • Walking ability as judged according to the SCSR emergency evacuation plan required by MSHA.
  • Ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other PPE as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Ability to bend or stoop for a full work period due to mine height.
  • Ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and on/off equipment and ladders.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions and have rapid reflex movements with good hand‑to‑eye coordination.
  • Ability to lift 25–50 pounds frequently and occasionally lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions, including varying weather, dust, mud, noise levels, light levels, and confined spaces.
Safety Sensitive Role
  • Cannot have an uncontrolled condition that may cause loss of consciousness or loss of control of a motor vehicle or large machinery.
  • Cannot have an uncontrolled respiratory or cardiac dysfunction likely to interfere with operating a motor vehicle or large machinery.
  • Cannot have a current clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure likely to interfere with operating a motor vehicle or large machinery.
  • Cannot have a current or unregulated mental or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with driving a motor vehicle or operating large machinery.
Vision & Hearing Requirements
  • At least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) in each eye with or without correction.
  • At least 70° field of vision in the horizontal meridian measured in each eye.
  • No more than 40dB average hearing loss in the better ear (with or without hearing aid).
