Job summary

Peabody Energy is hiring a Director of Maintenance at the Shoal Creek Mine in Alabama. The role leads the maintenance department, oversees budgets, staffing, scheduling, and drives asset management and reliability across the underground operation.

The ideal candidate has a strong track record in long-wall underground mine maintenance leadership, with engineering credentials and a focus on safety, continuous improvement, and regulatory compliance to ensure equipment availability and production

Qualifications

  • 10 years of progressive long-wall underground mine maintenance leadership experience.
  • 5–10 years of crew supervision and department management.
  • B.S. degree in mechanical or electrical engineering; M.S. preferred.
  • Candidates with an engineering degree may be considered with less than 10 years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, and lead the maintenance team or department.
  • Direct maintenance activities including budgets, staffing, scheduling, and facility management.
  • Develop and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Improve mine efficiency and equipment availability.
  • Manage performance, skills development, and talent growth.
  • Perform engineering design activities as necessary.
  • Initiate continuous improvement projects with other departments.
  • Ensure equipment availability meets production requirements.

Job description

Director of Maintenance

Location: Shoal Creek Mine, Oakman, Alabama (located between Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa counties, about an hour from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa). The mine is one of the deepest underground coal mines in the United States and produces high‑quality metallurgical coal.

About the role

Peabody’s Shoal Creek Mine emphasizes a safety‑first culture and seeks a Director of Maintenance to support mining operations and maintenance governance. The role involves asset management, auditing, training, and standards development for underground mine maintenance.

Responsibilities
  • Visibly support and champion Peabody’s Mission and Values.
  • Act in accordance with and adhere to the Safety as a Way of Life Management System.
  • Plan, direct, and lead the work of the maintenance team or department.
  • Plan, direct, and control maintenance activities including budgets, staffing, scheduling, facility management, and planning.
  • Develop and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Direct maintenance teams to improve overall mine efficiency and profitability through enhanced performance and equipment availability.
  • Manage and coordinate the duties of all department employees, including performance management, skills enhancement, and talent development.
  • Perform engineering design activities as necessary.
  • Initiate continuous improvement projects, coordinating with other departments, corporate personnel, and external suppliers.
  • Ensure equipment availability meets production requirements through regular and continuing maintenance.
  • Ensure all activities comply with safety, environmental, and statutory requirements.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the company.
Qualifications
  • 10 years of progressive long‑wall underground mine maintenance leadership experience required.
  • Minimum 5 years (preferably 10 years) of crew supervision and department management experience.
  • B.S. degree in mechanical or electrical engineering (or related field) required; M.S. preferred.
  • Individuals with a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering may be considered with less than 10 years of experience.
Physical Requirements – Underground Environment
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Ability to sit for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time and through varying sections of the mine.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs/steps, and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions and have rapid reflex movements.
  • Ability to lift 25–50 pounds frequently; occasionally lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions, including varying weather, dust, mud, noise, and light levels.
Safety Sensitive Role Requirements
  • Must have no uncontrolled conditions that could lead to loss of consciousness or impaired control of a motor vehicle or machinery.
  • Must meet minimum vision and hearing standards: at least 20/40 acuity in each eye and less than 40dB average hearing loss in the better ear.
