Job description

Important Information: This is a 12-month limited-term appointment with the possibility of becoming permanent.

The DOJ Office of Strategic Initiatives encourages you to apply for the fully remote/hybrid schedule Supervisor I (SUP I) position available within the Continuous Process Improvement Unit (CPI)! This is a 12-month Limited-Term supervisory opportunity designed to provide the selected candidate an opportunity to gain supervisory experience, leadership development, and exposure to department-wide continuous process improvement initiatives. The selected candidate will provide leadership continuity during the incumbent’s leave.

In this role, you will lead CPI in their mission to empower the Division of Administrative Services in its continuous process improvement efforts by providing innovative and strategic solutions to optimize business processes and fostering a growth-oriented work environment. Additionally, the CPI SUP I is responsible for overseeing continuous process improvement services, supervising staff, and supporting complex department-wide initiatives. Ultimately, CPI’s vision is to optimize the California Department of Justice's business processes by implementing modern methodologies to inspire strategic planning and promote continuous process improvement.

Under the direction of the Supervisor II, the Supervisor I (SUP I) directs, supervises, and coordinates the activities of a team of analysts and support staff in the Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Unit. CPI uses industry standard materials to partner with the DOJ to improve work processes. The SUP I is highly skilled and knowledgeable in areas of process documentation and LEAN Six Sigma methodologies and strategies. The SUP I leads projects and team members to success by practicing open communication, tracking milestones, collaborating with the OSI management team, and ensuring effectiveness is measured.

The SUP I is responsible for managing and supporting the Division’s most complex projects using appropriate strategies, which may include establishing regular communication with stakeholders as well as coordinating resources, meetings, and knowledge-share activities. The SUP I is familiar with and abides by policies, procedures, expectation memorandums, and Administrative Manuals from the DOJ, Division of Administrative Services - Office of the Chief, and the Office of Strategic Initiatives.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving and communication skills.

  • Experience developing or improving business processes, policies, or operational procedures.
  • Experience in or strong working knowledge of leadership, team management, and/or supervision.
  • Experience in or strong working knowledge of process improvement principles, trends, and methodologies, such as Lean Six Sigma.
  • Experience leading analytical staff and providing coaching, performance feedback, and workload oversight.
  • Experience preparing and delivering in-person and virtual presentations.
  • Experience using strong verbal and written communication skills to present information to all levels of stakeholders, including management, business and technology staff, and vendors.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Visio) and SharePoint.
  • Continuous Process Improvement certifications such as the LEAN Six Sigma certification are encouraged but not required.
  • Strong leadership, management, and supervisory skills.
