Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan is seeking a commissioning lead to evaluate facilities and systems, directing staff and coordinating with multiple site departments. You will drive projects from pre-feasibility through commissioning while maintaining schedule and budget.

Candidates should have a engineering degree with significant field experience in instrumentation, PLC/DCS/SCADA/HMI systems, and calibration tools. Travel up to 80% and hybrid work arrangements are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent with 6+ years field experience.
• High school diploma with 10 years progressive field experience.
• Experience in startup, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial instrumentation systems.
• Ability to read P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and instrument index documents.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and manage commissioning activities to evaluate facilities, systems, and assemblies for meeting objectives and criteria.
• Establish tactical and strategic goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
• Direct Supervisors and staff involved in the Commissioning process and ensure quality of work and adherence to policies.
• Deliver moderately complex capital projects from pre-feasibility to commissioning on time and within budget.
• Maintain project plans aligned with the approved schedule and standards.
• Coordinate work with other units and site departments; manage consultants and contractors.
• Provide information to site officials and the public.
• Perform other duties as required.

Where You Will Work

Our global headquarters is in Phoenix, Arizona. Several hundred employees support global operations in finance, human resources, information technology, planning and more from the main office, satellite offices or online. As a Hybrid employee, you’ll engage in virtual collaboration as well as attend in-person meetings at our Collaboration Hub in Phoenix or at one of our site locations. The Collaboration Hub provides an open, flexible workspace for individuals and teams to come together for various business needs. In-person attendance may vary based on the position and department requirements.

What You Will Do

• Under limited supervision, plans, organizes, and manages commissioning activities to evaluate the performance of facilities, systems, and assemblies for ensuring they meet defined objectives and criteria. Responsible for the all inclusive quality-oriented process for the planning, delivery, verification, and managing risks to critical functions
• Establishes tactical and strategic goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
• Directs Supervisors and other staff involved in the Commissioning process. Inspects daily operations and projects in progress and upon completion to assure quality of work. Provides administrative and technical direction to staff; interprets established policies and procedures.
• Accountable for delivering moderately complex capital projects, from pre-feasibility to commissioning, on time, budget, and specifications
• Maintains project plan in accordance to approved project schedule and established policies and standards
• Develops, plans, and coordinates the work plan for assigned commissioning responsibilities, which may include the administration of contractual proposals relating to construction projects. Coordinates work with other units and site departments.
• Provides information and resources to site officials and other departments
• Answer questions and provide information to the public
• Coordinates the activities of consultants and contractors
• Perform other duties as required.

What You Bring To Freeport

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field or equivalent in training and/or field experience and a minimum 6 years’ experience in the field OR High School diploma or GED and a minimum 10 years progressive experience in the field.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the startup, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial instrumentation systems.
• Proficient in the calibration, testing, and maintenance of field instruments, including pressure, temperature, flow, level, and analytical devices.
• Experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting control valves, valve positioners, actuators, and associated instrumentation.
• Strong understanding of PLC, DCS, SCADA, and HMI systems, including loop checking, functional testing, and commissioning activities.
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, instrument index documents, and control system drawings.
• Familiarity with digital communication protocols such as HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Modbus, Profibus, and Ethernet/IP.
• Experience performing instrument loop checks, pre-commissioning, startup support, and system turnover activities. Proficient in the use of calibration and diagnostic equipment, including documenting calibration records and test results.
• Experience utilizing computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and commissioning management systems is preferred.

What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently $97,500-$138,000. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.

What We Require

Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol-free work environment using mandatory pre-employment drug testing as allowed by applicable laws. Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 80% of the time (up to 40% domestic travel and up to 40% international travel), based on business needs. Domestic travel may require extended time at operating sites, including week-long assignments or longer. International travel typically involves trips of two weeks or more. This position also requires a minimum of two days per week working on-site at company locations and may require additional on-site presence based on operational needs.
