Job summary

DOWL is seeking a motivated Transportation Design Intern for Summer 2027 in Helena, Montana. The intern will assist with field data collection, draft design packages, and support transportation planning across Montana, under mentorship from experienced engineers.

The role offers exposure to AutoCAD/MicroStation, civil design workflows, and collaboration with Water, Environmental, and Structures groups. Prior coursework toward a civil engineering degree is required; driving is a requirement.

Qualifications

• Education: at least one year of college-level coursework toward a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering.
• Experience: prior work in civil-engineering related fields desirable.

Responsibilities

• Assist with field investigations, analysis of alternative solutions, and project design.
• Perform engineering calculations in support of design projects.
• Calculate construction quantities from plans and specifications to tabulate bid items and estimate costs.
• Provide AutoCAD and/or MicroStation drafting support.
• Prepare and route project-related correspondence and record keeping.
• Assist with writing and editing construction specifications and technical reports.
• Complete other engineering-related duties as assigned.
