Job summary

DOWL is seeking a Transportation Design Intern for Summer 2027 in Billings, MT. The intern will support transportation planning and design efforts, gaining hands-on experience across civil engineering disciplines.

Responsibilities include field data collection, design drafting, and collaboration with traffic engineers to develop safer, efficient road solutions. The role offers mentorship from experienced professionals and exposure to multidisciplinary projects within a growing western U.S.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with at least one year of coursework.
• Ability to perform field investigations and assist with project design.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD or MicroStation is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Assist with field investigations, analysis of alternative solutions, and project design.
• Perform engineering calculations in support of design projects.
• Calculate construction quantities from plans and specifications to tabulate bid items and estimate construction costs.
• Perform AutoCAD and or MicroStation drafting support.
• Prepare and route project-related correspondence and record keeping.
• Assist with writing and editing construction specifications and technical reports.
• Complete other engineering-related duties as assigned.
