Job summary

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) seeks a Traffic Signal and Lighting Intern for the Ballwin, MO area to assist in installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals and related ITS equipment. Work is performed under supervision to support operational reliability.

The role emphasizes hands-on learning through duties on emergency calls, maintenance, and equipment testing while maintaining records and contributing to preventive maintenance programs.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in 2-year/associate degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
• Minimum 30 credits completed toward degree with transcript evidence.
• GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Responsibilities

• Assist on emergency calls and maintenance of signals, lighting, ITS and related equipment.
• Investigate customer service reports related to signal and lighting operations and report findings.
• Respond to routine utility locate requests.
• Assist in installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal and communication equipment.
• Interpret signal circuit plans and schematics for troubleshooting.
• Utilize software to communicate with and program electronic traffic control devices and radio equipment.
• Assist in installation, repair, and troubleshooting of communication devices including fiber networks, wireless devices, and radios.
• Assist in inventory of electronic/electrical parts and supplies.
• Contribute to preventive maintenance programs.
• Maintain records and documentation of installations and repairs.

What You’ll Do

• Assists on emergency calls, such as malfunctioning equipment and traffic crashes involving equipment for signals, lighting, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), aviation, and navigational lighting, and communication systems, and takes appropriate action.
• Assists in the investigation of customer service reports with regard to signal and lighting operations and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices and report of findings.
• Responds to routine utility locates requests from Missouri One Call.
• Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal equipment, radio communication equipment, ITS, roadway, aviation and navigational lighting, and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices.
• Assists in the interpretation of signal circuit plans and schematics for trouble shooting problems with electronic/electrical components.
• Utilizes software to communicate with and program electronic traffic control devices and radio communication equipment.
• Assists in the installation, repair, and trouble shooting of communication devices including fiber networks, wireless devices, and radios.
• Assists in the inventory of electronic/electrical parts and supplies.
• Assists in the completion of the department's signal and lighting preventive maintenance programs.
• Maintains required records and documentation on the installation, maintenance, repair, or replacement of signals, lighting, and communication equipment.
• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Enrolled in a relevant 2-year/associate’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
• 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
• Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
