Job summary

State-of-Missour MoDOT in Ballwin, MO is seeking a traffic signal and lighting intern to support installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and related equipment under direct supervision.

You will assist on emergency calls, help investigate service reports, locate utilities, and participate in preventive maintenance programs while recording activities and maintaining documentation.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a 2-year/associate’s degree program relevant to the field.
• Completion of at least 30 credit hours toward the current degree.
• GPA maintained at least 2.0 (4.0 scale).

Responsibilities

• Assist on emergency calls for signals, lighting, ITS, and related equipment; take appropriate action.
• Help investigate service reports on signal and lighting operations.
• Respond to routine utility locates requests from Missouri One Call.
• Assist in installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal and communication equipment.
• Help interpret signal circuit plans and troubleshoot electronic components.
• Use software to program electronic traffic control and radio devices.
• Assist installation and testing of fiber networks, wireless devices, and radios.
• Assist in inventory of electronic/electrical parts and supplies.
• Support preventive maintenance programs for signals and lighting.
• Maintain records on installation, maintenance, repair or replacement.
• Perform other department duties as required.

30 credit hours completed toward current degree program

GPA of at least 2.0 on 4.0 scale

What you’ll do:

• Assists on emergency calls, such as malfunctioning equipment and traffic crashes involving equipment for signals, lighting, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), aviation, and navigational lighting, and communication systems, and takes appropriate action.
• Assists in the investigation of customer service reports with regard to signal and lighting operations and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices and report of findings.
• Responds to routine utility locates requests from Missouri One Call.
• Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal equipment, radio communication equipment, ITS, roadway, aviation and navigational lighting, and other electronic/electrical traffic control devices.
• Assists in the interpretation of signal circuit plans and schematics for trouble shooting problems with electronic/electrical components.
• Utilizes software to communicate with and program electronic traffic control devices and radio communication equipment.
• Assists in the installation, repair, and trouble shooting of communication devices including fiber networks, wireless devices, and radios.
• Assists in the inventory of electronic/electrical parts and supplies.
• Assists in the completion of the department's signal and lighting preventive maintenance programs.
• Maintains required records and documentation on the installation, maintenance, repair, or replacement of signals, lighting, and communication equipment.
• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

• Enrolled in a relevant 2-year/associate’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
• 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
• Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
