About the Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis

There are four precincts in Harris County. The four elected commissioners, along with an elected county judge, serve as members of Harris County Commissioners Court, the administrative head of the county’s government. Commissioner Rodney Ellis represents the constituents of Precinct One.

With approximately 1.17 million residents, Harris County Precinct One is a diverse, urban precinct that covers 363 square miles. The precinct’s population is roughly 33% African American, 38% Latino, 21% Anglo, 6% Asian, and 2% other or multiple races. It stretches from downtown Houston to Brazoria County, including landmarks like the Harris County Courthouse, Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park, BBVA Compass Stadium, NRG Park, and the Texas Medical Center. It also hosts several higher education institutions such as Houston Community College, Rice University, Texas Southern University, the University of Houston, and the University of St. Thomas. The precinct manages over 21 parks, 10 community centers, hike-and-bike trails, maintenance centers, and area offices, providing various services to residents.

What you will do at Precinct One:

The Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis is seeking a Temporary Part-time Summer Lifeguard for our Programs Division. This role involves ensuring pool safety, enforcing policies, and interacting with students. Adherence to safety standards and protocols is critical.

The Summer Lifeguard position is a temporary part-time role from June to August 2025.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Surveillance and Prevention: Constantly monitor the pool area, identify hazards, enforce safety rules, and provide emergency care if needed.
  2. Customer Service: Communicate effectively with diverse guests, answer questions, and assist with equipment rentals.
  3. Maintenance and Cleaning: Keep the pool environment clean and safe, report maintenance issues.
  4. Training and Certification: Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguarding certifications; participate in ongoing training.
  5. Administrative Tasks: Complete incident reports, handle complaints, and participate in staff meetings.
  6. Other duties as required.

What you will bring to Precinct One:

Education: Currently attending high school or possessing a high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: At least three years of related experience or previous youth work in swimming or recreation.

Licensure: Must possess and maintain:

  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Training
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong swimming skills across various strokes and water safety knowledge.
  • Safety awareness, including CPR and first aid proficiency.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and patience.
  • Physical fitness to perform exercises and lead classes.
  • Adaptability in teaching strategies.
  • Organizational skills for planning and tracking progress.

  • Work around water daily, with frequent noise exposure.
