Job summary

Westinghouse Electric Company LLC in Cranberry Township, PA, seeks a Nuclear Core Design intern for a paid full-time summer position (May - August 2027). You will join a nuclear design team, participate in training, and perform core design calculations using internal and external tools under senior guidance.

You will interpret results with mentors to help design loading patterns for PWR plants, and work on projects ranging from core calculations to fuel design and automation.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher in nuclear engineering.
• Completed Sophomore year of college.
• Core introductory nuclear classes.
• Interest in Core Neutronics and Nuclear Fuel Design.
• Computer simulation experience.

Responsibilities

• Participate in introductory nuclear design training and seminars.
• Perform nuclear core design calculations using internal and external nuclear core design simulation codes, following internal methodology.
• Interpret results with mentors to produce loading pattern designs for operating PWR plants.
• Become a member of a nuclear engineering intern team and collaborate with interns, engineers, project managers, and business leaders.
• Examples of projects include bound core calculations, core loading patterns, new fuel designs, and economic models.
• Nuclear core design calculation automation and software design.

About the role:

As a Nuclear Core Design intern, you will report to the Nuclear Design Manager and be located at our Cranberry facility. This is a paid full-time hybrid position for the summer, May - August 2027.

Key Responsibilities:

• You will participate in introductory nuclear design specific training and nuclear engineering learning seminars
• Perform nuclear core design calculations by using the internal and external nuclear core design simulation codes, following internal methodology, and consulting with experienced peer and mentor engineers
• You will interpret results and work with experienced engineering mentors to produce new projects and loading pattern designs for operating PWR plants
• Become a member of a nuclear engineering intern team work with interns, engineers, project managers, and business leaders
• Examples of nuclear core design intern projects may include:
  • Bound Nuclear Core Calculations, Core Accident Scenarios, Core Loading Pattern Designs
  • Test and Implementation of New Fuel Product Designs
  • Economical Models, Estimates, and Engineering Technical Descriptions
  • Feasibility Studies and “What if” Scenario Modeling of PWR Core Capabilities
  • Core Startup Calculations and Low Power Physics Testing Models
  • Nuclear Core Design Calculation Automation and Software Design

Qualifications:

• Pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher in nuclear engineering

We are committed to transparency and equity in all of our people practices. The hourly rate for this position, which is dependent upon experience, qualifications and skills, is estimated to be $25.40 to $29.00 per hour.
