Job summary

American Electric Power invites engineering students to join a 10-12 week Summer Internship Program in Roanoke, VA, with a paid stipend and a housing allowance for moves over 45 miles. Qualifications

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering in an ABET-accredited program.
  • Freshman year completed.
  • Graduation date of December 2027 or later.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Not eligible for sponsorship, OPT, or CPT.
  • Willingness to relocate for the summer internship.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interest in the electric utility sector, energy efficiency, and sustainability practices.
  • Effective time management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with project teams and engineers on planning, design and execution of enterprise projects.
  • Engage in design reviews, training sessions, and constructability assessments.
  • Participate in field visits to understand power system operations and inspections.
  • Assist in developing databases, reports and dashboards for data-driven decisions.
  • Support documentation for decision-making and safety initiatives.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines in office and field environments.
  • Expand engineering skills through new challenges.
