Job summary

American Electric Power invites engineering students to join a 10-12 week Summer Internship Program in Roanoke, VA, with a paid stipend and a housing allowance for moves over 45 miles. Interns work on real projects, collaborating with senior engineers and mentors to develop practical solutions in the electric utility sector.

Qualifications include pursuing an ABET‑accredited engineering degree (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical), freshman year completed, and a December 2027 or later

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering in an ABET-accredited program.
• Freshman year completed.
• Graduation date of December 2027 or later.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Not eligible for sponsorship, OPT, or CPT.
• Willingness to relocate for the summer internship.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Interest in the electric utility sector, energy efficiency, and sustainability practices.
• Effective time management skills.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with project teams and engineers on planning, design and execution of enterprise projects.
• Engage in design reviews, training sessions, and constructability assessments.
• Participate in field visits to understand power system operations and inspections.
• Assist in developing databases, reports and dashboards for data-driven decisions.
• Support documentation for decision-making and safety initiatives.
• Adhere to safety guidelines in office and field environments.
• Expand engineering skills through new challenges.
