Job summary

ATI Specialty Materials is seeking a Summer 2027 Process Metallurgist Intern for its Monroe, NC site. The 10-week program offers hands-on experience applying metallurgy to real-world manufacturing processes within the billets conditioning and forging areas.

You will work with experienced metallurgists and operations teams, tackle projects on titanium processing, hot working, and data analysis, and present findings to peers and leadership.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or related Materials/Metallurgy
• Completion of at least sophomore year; rising juniors and seniors preferred
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and interest in manufacturing and process improvement

Responsibilities

• Assist in analyzing titanium hot working processes and correlate changes with microstructural changes
• Conduct process audits of Monroe facilities to evaluate operator execution and process compliance
• Analyze process data to identify reduction schedules and opportunities for improvement
• Support process optimization and manufacturing improvements across alloy groups (nickel, titanium, specialty steel)
• Prepare and present findings and recommendations to peers and leadership

Turn Metallurgy Into Manufacturing Impact – Intern in Process Metallurgy at ATI

At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a Process Metallurgist Intern, you’ll gain hands‑on experience applying fundamental metallurgy to real‑world manufacturing processes. You’ll work alongside experienced metallurgists and operations teams to analyze process data, evaluate microstructural changes, identify improvement opportunities, and support process optimization across Monroe’s Press, Radial Forge, and Conditioning operations.

What You’ll Work On

Depending on your project assignment, you may:

• Analyze titanium hot working processes by correlating changes such as reduced furnace soak times and modified reduction schedules with microstructural changes and their impact on product testing and RFT.
• Perform process audits of standardized tasks within the Monroe Press, Radial Forge, and Conditioning areas to evaluate operator execution, process compliance, and opportunities for improvement.
• Analyze Radial Forge output and process data to identify reduction schedules associated with excessive forging forces
• Apply metallurgical knowledge and data analysis to support process optimization and manufacturing improvements across nickel, titanium, and specialty steel alloy groups.
• Prepare and present project findings and recommendations to peers and leadership.

• Understanding of basic metallurgy and materials science principles.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Interest in manufacturing, metalworking, and process improvement.
• Ability to analyze statistical/process data and identify trends.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a manufacturing
