Job summary

John Burns Real Estate Consulting, LLC, is seeking a motivated intern for its Building Products Consulting group in Chicago, IL. This in-person 10-week summer internship provides hands-on client project work, a capstone project, and a final presentation.

You will learn through mentorship and team collaboration while developing data analysis and visualization skills focused on housing markets and macroeconomics.

Qualifications

• GPA 3.3 or higher is preferred.
• Major GPA 3.3 or higher is preferred.
• Rising seniors or graduate students (Graduating Spring 2027 - Spring 2028).
• Preferred fields: Economics, Finance, Real Estate or related field.
• Proficiency in Excel; Tableau familiarity; Python and/or R preferred; familiarity with public data sources is a plus.
• Strong writing to convey analysis clearly and concisely.
• Interest in housing industry data analysis, data visualization, and macroeconomic research.
• Collaborative team player with attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
• Willingness to learn new skills.

Responsibilities

2027 Summer Internship Program

This Burns Internship provides meaningful work experiences and ongoing support and guidance to ensure you have valuable experience and prepare you for a professional career.

This Consulting intern will be working with our Building Products Consulting group. This is an in-person internship in our Chicago, Illinois office.

Program Details

As an intern, you'll begin the summer orientation delivered by experienced team members, similar to the training received by new employees. You will be working on real-time client projects, as well as a capstone project. Your capstone project will be a significant, strategic project that aligns with our real business needs and initiatives. At the end of your 10-week internship, you will do a final presentation of your capstone project, and what you learned throughout your internship.

Start Dates

• May 26th - August 6th
• June 16th - August 27th

Details

• Interns will work 40 hours per week, in our Chicago, Illinois office.
• Salary is $25/hour.
• Positions will be posted for students to apply in October, and each position will be posted for two weeks.
• Positions will be posted until Friday, November 6th, 2026.
• Offers will be extended by Friday, December 18th, 2026.

What You Will Learn

• Understanding our organization, industry, clients, and professional experience by working with our consulting group
• Gaining exposure to how data-driven insights inform decisions for developers, homebuilders, and Private Equity through hands-on work with economic, demographic, and housing data
• Collaborating with multiple groups within JBREC to learn how market analysis, forecasting, and strategic insights come together to support client engagements

Projects Our Interns May Be Working On

• Working with several proprietary and external databases that track housing markets, construction trends, and economic conditions
• Conducting targeted research on topics like migration, affordability, construction, and remodeling activity to support ongoing project work
• Gaining exposure to projects across multiple real estate asset classes, including single-family, multifamily, and other developments
• Analyzing market trends in building products such as windows, siding, HVAC, or plumbing fixtures
• Supporting research on material substitution trends, channel strategy, and share of wallet analysis for building product manufacturers, distributors, and PE investors

How Do You Qualify?

The Burns Internship Program is designed for high-performing students. We prefer candidates who meet the following criteria:

• Cumulative GPA: 3.3
• Major GPA: 3.3
• Rising seniors and graduate students (Graduating Spring 2027 - Spring 2028)
• Preferred Fields of study: Economics, Finance, Real Estate, or a related field
• Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in Excel
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools and techniques, such as Tableau, is a plus
  • Python and R are preferred (not required) skills.
  • Some familiarity with publicly available/government data sources is a preferred (not required) skill.
• Writing Skills: Strong writing to convey analysis clearly and concisely
• Interest: Curiosity and desire to work in the housing industry, focusing on data analysis, data visualization, and macroeconomic research
