Job summary

KPFF Consulting Engineers seeks a subsurface utility engineering (SUE) Lead to manage field crews responsible for locating, designating, and mapping underground utilities in the Los Angeles area. You will act as field authority for SUE investigations, ensuring work meets project requirements, quality standards, and ASCE 38-22 guidelines.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 5+ years in SUE, utility locating, or surveying/mapping.
• Experience operating GPR and electromagnetic locating equipment.
• Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
• Strong leadership and field coordination experience.
• Preferred: ASCE 38-22 knowledge; OSHA 30; GIS/CAD experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise SUE field crews performing utility designation, locating, and mapping.
• Operate advanced utility detection equipment incl. EM locators, GPR, GPS/Total Station.
• Interpret utility records, plans, and GIS data before field work.
• Ensure accurate field documentation including sketches, data collection, and reports.
• Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and contractors.
• Conduct QA checks to ensure compliance with ASCE 38-22 standards.
• Manage daily crew activities including safety briefings and scheduling.
• Train and mentor junior SUE staff.
