Job summary

The City of San Antonio is seeking a temporary Pre-K classroom assistant for the Pre-K 4 SA program. You will support teachers with learning experiences, prepare materials, and help with daily activities for 4-year-olds. You may assist with loading/unloading bus passengers, and ensure safety per licensing standards.

Work hours are 6:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with schedule variation based on departmental needs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• CDA credential OR 12 college hours in Education or Childhood Development.
• Previous experience with young children in educational or care settings.
• Ability to pass DFPS background check.
• Certified early childhood teacher.
• Bilingual English and Spanish.

Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for assisting in the classroom with implementing learning experiences that advance the intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development of children ages birth - (4) four-year old enrolled in the City\'s Pre-K 4 SA program at the Model Education Centers. Supports Pre-K 4 SA teaching staff with preparation of materials, daily activities, and daily growth and development of students. Coordinates the loading and unloading of students on and off the bus at transportation sites. Ensures the safety of students under care and in compliance with Child Care Licensing standards. This is a temporary position which will be utilized in the classroom on an as needed basis. Exercises no supervision.

This position is funded by sales tax that has been approved by the citizens of San Antonio for a limited time period. This position, therefore, is subject to at-will employment status, and is unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission.

Work Hours

6:45 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Schedule will vary and be determined based on departmental needs.

Essential Job Functions

• Assists with the implementation of early-age curriculum in the classroom.
• Assists in planning and preparing the learning environment and preparing needed materials and supplies, which includes maintaining a clean and organized classroom.
• Observes students' progress and communicates with other educators.
• Prepares, adapts, and delivers instructional material to students in groups and individually to include conducting large-group and small-group activities.
• Assists in creating and maintaining student records and prepares reports relative to student performance, attendance, meals, safety, licensing standards, etc.
• Assists in maintaining discipline, supervision of students and uses positive guidance skills appropriate for young children.
• Assists in maintaining order in the classroom; monitors and engages students in developmentally appropriate activities, often by interacting with children at eye-level.
• Monitors and assists in maintaining order at transportation sites, in the classroom, motor skills room, playground, cafeteria, hallways, and other areas. Builds relationships with students to create a positive, safe, and welcoming school culture.
• Maintains open communication with parents.
• May assist students while loading, riding, and unloading buses.
• Assists with fastening the appropriate child safety restraint system and follows all safety routines and procedures for transportation.
• Monitors and assists in maintaining order at transportation sites, in the classroom, motor sills room, playground, hallways, and other areas.
• Reports incidents, illnesses, injuries, and violations to appropriate personnel.
• Assist Food Service Workers in distributing breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily.
• Collaborate with Master Teachers and/or Assistant Teachers in the classrooms during scheduled breaks.
• Participates in required professional development.
• May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities and assist non-ambulatory students.
• In the case of an emergency situation, may be required to lift and carry students weighing up to 50 pounds to move students during dangerous situations.
• Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).

Preferred Qualifications

• Child Development Associate (CDA) credential OR twelve (12) college hours in Education or Childhood Development from an accredited college or university.
• Previous experience working with young children in a private, charter, public school, or daycare setting.
• Ability to pass DFPS (Texas Department of Family Protective Services) background check.
• Certified early childhood teacher.
• Bilingual in English & Spanish.

• Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
