The K-12 On-Call Substitute Teacher plays a crucial role in maintaining the continuity of classroom instruction in the absence of the regular teacher. This position involves facilitating a positive learning environment, delivering pre‑designed lesson plans, and ensuring the well‑being of students.
Essential Functions, Tasks, and Responsibilities
- Execute pre‑established lesson plans and teaching materials to ensure a smooth transition of classroom instruction.
- Manage classroom behavior and enforce discipline policies to create a conducive learning environment.
- Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles, needs, and abilities of students.
- Foster a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere, promoting respect, collaboration, and engagement among students.
- Maintain accurate attendance records, report any incidents, and follow established procedures for student safety.
- Assist students with questions, assignments, and coursework to facilitate their understanding of the subject matter.
- Provide clear and concise instructions, explanations, and guidance on classroom activities.
- Uphold and promote the school's policies, procedures, and academic standards.
- Collaborate with other staff members, such as administrators, teachers, and support personnel, to ensure a seamless educational experience.
- Be punctual and reliable, arriving on time for assigned classes and adhering to the school's schedule.
- Handle emergency situations, including medical incidents and unexpected classroom disruptions, with composure and appropriate action.
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability when facing unforeseen challenges or changes in lesson plans.
- Maintain a professional and approachable demeanor when interacting with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Continuously improve one's teaching skills and stay updated on educational trends and best practices.
- Complete any additional responsibilities or tasks as assigned by school administration to support the educational process.

Required Qualifications
- "Born again" Christian with an active, growing relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
- Faithfully attends and supports a local church whose beliefs are in agreement with the CHESS Statement of Belief.
- Agree with, support, and abide by the CHESS Christian School Statement of Belief, Lifestyle Statement, and Educational Philosophy.
- 4‑yr degree from a college, university, or Bible school.
- Able to pass a background check.
- Able to supervise students during outdoor recess in various weather conditions, including the heat and cold.
- Ability to quickly adapt to varying classroom environments, student ages, and subject matters.
- Flexibility to respond to the changing needs of the school with a positive, team‑oriented attitude.
- Ability to work independently in the classroom to address academic and administrative responsibilities while adhering to the school’s policies and teaching standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous teaching experience in a classroom setting.
- Depending on the grade level and subject matter, specific expertise in the subject area (IE: Pre‑Calculus, Spanish, etc).
- An understanding of effective classroom management strategies and techniques that foster an environment of discipleship.
