Responsibilities

  • Delivering Instruction: Substitute teachers deliver lessons based on the plans and materials left by the regular teacher.
  • Classroom Management: Maintaining a positive and productive learning environment, managing student behavior, and enforcing school policies.
  • Following Procedures: Adhering to the school's rules, procedures, and daily schedule, including taking attendance and documenting student behavior.
  • Providing a Safe Environment: Taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Communication: Communicating with students, school staff, and the absent teacher as needed.
  • Flexibility: Adapting to different classrooms, subjects, and grade levels, as well as to potential changes in the daily schedule.
  • Maintaining Records: Keeping track of attendance, student behavior, and any other relevant information as required by the school.
  • Following Lesson Plans: As much as possible, substitute teachers should follow the lesson plans and instructions provided by the regular teacher, and should not make changes to the curriculum without authorization, except in emergencies.
  • Professionalism: Maintaining a professional demeanor in appearance, communication, and conduct.

Requirements Prior to Substituting

1. Background check and fingerprinting completed

Substitute Teacher Pay Rates

1. Hours worked will be actual time from time-in to time-out not including duty free lunch, duty free conference or times when the substitute is not on campus.
2. For non-certified substitutes the rate is $12.00 per hour.
3. For substitutes who hold a valid Texas teaching certificate, the rate is $14.00 per hour.
4. Regular certified teachers who substitute during their conference period shall be paid $15.00
