Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Support students to help them succeed in class and school community.
  • De-escalate student misconduct and respond to incidents promptly.
  • Maintain assigned post and remain at post unless directed otherwise.
  • Respond to incidents and fights using Safety Care skills.
  • Patrol school property and monitor access for unauthorized persons.
  • Monitor interior and exterior door security.
  • Redirect or escort individuals from the property when needed.
  • Report unusual activity to the School Safety Coordinator or administrator.
  • Complete incident and misconduct reports; deliver reports on request.
  • Assist with locker organization and locker searches.
  • Enforce visitor protocol at entrances and ensure authorized access.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to grow security skills.
  • Lead traffic control at student arrival/dismissal at Grandview.
  • Build positive relationships with students and staff to maintain a safe environment.
  • Foster respectful interactions with students at all times.
  • Assist in de-escalating behaviors to maximize learning time.
  • Serve in emergency response during crises (fire, tornado, active shooter).
  • Coordinate with local police per MOU with Derry Borough Police and PA State Police.

  • Armed Security Guard Services (requires Act 235 Certification and NASRO Training)
    • $25.00 an hour
    • Weekend/After School Rate: $30.00 an hour
  • Unarmed Security Guard Services (requires NASRO Training)
    • $20.00 an hour
    • Weekend/After School Rate: $25.00 an hour

The Derry Area School District is seeking qualified candidates for the position of “School Security Guard”. Qualified candidates must meet or exceed the following qualifications and be able to perform the associated duties:

Qualifications
  • The candidate is licensed under 18 Pa.C.S. Ch. 61 Subch. A (relating to Uniform Firearms Act), *with certain exceptions defined below;

    • The candidate has successfully completed and is currently certified under Act 235 of 1974, known as the Lethal Weapons Training Act, *with certain exceptions defined below; and

    • The school security guard has satisfied the background check requirements under Sections 111 and 111.1 of the Public School Code and 23 Pa.C.S. § 6344 (relating to employees having contact with children; adoptive and foster parents).

      • *Active law enforcement officers are exempt from the training requirements for school security guards under (1) and (2) above upon presentation of evidence to the school entity or nonpublic school of their completion of the training requirements under 53 Pa.C.S. Ch. 21 Subch. D (relating to municipal police education and training).

  • *Retired law enforcement officers are exempt from the training requirements for school security guards under (1) and (2) above if the retired officer: (a) complies with Section 8.1 of Act 235 of 1974 (Lethal Weapons Training Act); or (b) has been issued a firearm training and qualification card under Section 5 of Act 79 of 2005 (Retired Law Enforcement Identification Act).

Must successfully complete the Basic School Resource Officer Course of Instruction offered by NASRO or an equivalent course of instruction approved by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD).

Responsibilities
  • Security personnel will actively engage in supporting students in order for them to be successful in the classroom and school community

  • The role of a school security guard is physically demanding as they are the first line of defense to defuse and de-escalate student misconduct and/or serious incidents and must respond urgently

  • Fulfill duties associated with the post assigned as part of the school’s comprehensive security plan; maintain an orderly post and remain at the post at all times unless otherwise directed by a supervisor

  • Actively respond to incidents, fights or other issues in the school that threaten the safety of students, staff, and/or guests utilizing Safety Care skills up to and including momentary physical intervention if warranted by the safety risk

  • Patrol (foot or mobile) and monitor school property for unauthorized persons

  • Monitor interior and exterior door security throughout the building

  • If needed, redirect or escort from property

  • Report unusual activity or suspicions of safety issues to the School Safety and Security Coordinator or building administrator in a timely fashion

  • Complete proper documentation related to incident reports and misconduct reports

  • Produce and deliver reports upon request by the School Safety and Security Coordinator.

  • Assist with the organization and distribution of student lockers and locker searches

  • Monitor school grounds and school entrances to ensure only authorized personnel and authorized visitors access the school; if assigned to the main entrance, ensure all guests follow visitor protocol and triage visitor requests

  • Actively participate in professional development training to ensure ongoing growth and to advance skills

  • As assigned, monitor the student entry and dismissal process to ensure safety

    • Including but not limited to leading traffic control at Grandview for student arrival and dismissal

  • Build positive and professional relationships with students and leverage those relationships to establish and maintain productive and safe learning environments and common areas of the building

  • Build positive and professional relationships with all district staff, including other district school security guards

  • Exercise dignity and respect when interacting with students at all times

  • Lead efforts to de-escalate inappropriate student behaviors and assist students with maximizing their time on task in classrooms

  • Serve as a primary participant in emergency response during crisis situations including but not limited to fire, tornado and active shooter incidents

  • Maintain a positive working relationship with local police in accordance with the memorandum of understanding with Derry Borough Police and the Pennsylvania State Police
