Job Description

PRIMARY SUPERVISOR:

Principal

APPOINTMENT:

Instructional Assistants shall be appointed annually, upon the recommendation of the Principal to the Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.Shall have a working knowledge of computers.

2.Shall have demonstrated people skills to indicate ability to function in a team oriented environment.

3.Shall have a high school diploma, GED Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining aG.E.D. as required by Kentucky law.

4.Shall have successful completion of Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment; or completed 2 yearsof study at an institution of higher education; or obtained an associates (or higher) degree.

5.Shall have some experience in working with children in an organized setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Shall have the ability to sit, light lifting, stoop, any and all body movements as related to the jobdescription.

JOB GOAL:

To assist a certified teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups typically inprograms with exceptional children or equivalent programs and to monitor and report studentprogress.

GENERAL DUTIES & PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Shall determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.
  • Shall present a positive image of the school to parents, and convey to them the school's genuineconcern with the education, growth and development of each student.
  • Shall seek to establish friendly and cooperative partnerships between home and school.
  • Shall work to develop a positive public relationship between the school district and the community.
  • Shall carry out assignments in a timely manner without undue checking.
  • Shall react positively to directives.
  • Shall have a willingness to cooperate with the superintendent, district administrators, principals and staff.
  • Shall maintain the confidentiality, both verbally and in written form, of each student's educational records.
  • Shall strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Shall take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Shall adhere to School Board of Education Policies and Procedures.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional:

  • Shall assist Special Education Teacher in developing classroom curriculum based on individual students' needs
  • Shall assist with creating, and maintaining student files/records
  • Shall assist teacher in development and implementation of alternate assessment
  • Shall provide instructions based on lesson plans and assist individual students in comprehending concepts
  • Shall adapt to classroom activities and assignments to serve the purpose of reinforcing classroom objectives
  • Shall perform specialized tasks to achieve instructional and behavioral objectives
  • Shall assist special education teacher with behavior modification procedures
  • Shall create and submit student observation reports, behavioral data logs, IEP progress logs, etc.
  • Shall assist student to and from bus and if applicable during CBI

Inclusion in the Regular Classroom:

  • Shall assist student to and from mainstreaming and provide modification as needed
  • Shall assist student in achieving IEP goals during community based instruction
  • Shall assist with other students in the classroom when possible, ensure the student you are assigned to has their needs met first
  • Shall assist Regular Education teacher in developing and adapting conventional teaching methods to meet the individual needs of students
  • Shall confer with Regular Education teachers to derive information about all students in the classroom
  • Shall provide support in imparting specialized education based on lesson plans
  • Shall assist lead teachers in creating and implementing core special education programs
  • Shall provide instructional support to lead teachers by preparing instructions materials and handouts
  • Shall work with student on a one-on-one basis by providing them in undivided attention

Behavior Monitoring:

  • Shall observe students for changes in behavior and report observations to Special Education/Regular Education teacher
  • Shall implement behavioral plans to meet students’ needs for social, educational, cognitive, mental and physical development

Personal Care:

  • Shall assist students with personal care needs such as toileting, clothing, hygiene and washing up routines (Toileting needs to include lifting, transitioning to and from chair and attending to female needs)
  • Shall help students with their mobility needs and ensure provision of a safe classroom environment, know how to lock down wheelchairs if needed
  • Shall monitor students during meal times, meal times, transition times, etc. for safety
  • Shall maintain Medicaid logs as needed
  • Shall monitor students during activities and downtime and intervene in case of adverse activities
  • Shall assist students at lunch time by providing help with opening lunch boxes and drinking water
  • Shall apply and remove physical therapy equipment to students such as body braces and leg braces
  • Shall communicate with students to determine their needs and ensure that they are fulfilled properly
  • Shall observe students for changes in physical health and report observations to Special Education/Regular Education teacher
  • Shall supervise and assist students during indoor and outdoor activities
  • Shall ask questions to understand individual student's medical and family backgrounds
  • Shall take notes of important information such as trauma or physical limitations for further reference
  • Shall maintain knowledge of students’ medical histories to ensure that any medical emergencies are handled appropriately
  • Shall observe students for signs of deterioration or improvement and document and report either / both
  • Shall respond to emergency situations such as injuries, fights or medical issues with a view to immediate resolution

SALARY:

Commensurate with the school district's Classified Salary Schedule.
