Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Tutor individuals or small groups, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by a teacher; maintain records of student progress.
• Participate as a member of an instructional team including remediation teams.
• Prepare and organize lessons as directed by the teacher; administer and score tests; assist in determining English proficiency of identified students.
• Assist in administering diagnostic tests; score and record test information.
• Monitor and report student behavior; report progress regarding performance and behavior; assist with lab work as needed.
• Perform routine clerical duties and maintain classroom records; operate copy machines; maintain attendance records.
• Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays, and exhibits; operate audio‑visual equipment; distribute and collect supplies.
• Assist in overseeing students in labs; provide supplies inventory as necessary.
• Assist students with proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and guidance.
• Confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
• Contact parents of absent students; make home visits as necessary.
• Assure health and safety of students following procedures; direct group activities and supervise meals and playgrounds; assist with drills and field trips.
• Participate in meetings and in‑service training programs.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

BASIC FUNCTION: Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual(s) or small groups; monitor and report student progress.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Instructional Assistants/Aides assist a certified teacher by performing a variety of support functions in a regular classroom setting. They work within a complex program typically requiring additional skills and characterized by increased independence of action.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

• Tutor individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by a teacher; maintain records of student progress.
• Participate as a member of an instructional team including remediation teams.
• Prepare and organize lessons as directed by the teacher; administer and score a variety of tests according to established guidelines; assist in determining the English proficiency of identified students.

Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and some experience in working with children in an organized setting. Obtain an official college transcript from an accredited college with 64 college hours or pass the Kentucky Para‑educators Exam.
