Job summary

West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science is seeking a substitute custodian to create a clean, safe, and inviting environment for students, staff, and visitors. You will maintain classrooms, hallways, and common areas, promoting a conducive atmosphere for learning and productivity.

Responsibilities include daily cleaning with mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and floor scrubbing; keeping exteriors and grounds tidy; and reporting repairs as needed.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrate aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities.
• Ability to work effectively with school personnel and students in a diverse school community.
• Solid record of punctuality.
• Willing to be trained.
• Reliable and team-oriented.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine daily cleaning and disinfecting of classrooms, hallways, and common areas.
• Vacuum, dust, mop, and operate floor scrubbers as needed.
• Keep buildings, walkways, parking lot, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
• Check daily that exit doors are open and panic hardware works during occupancy.
• Clean chalkboards and marker boards weekly.
• Report major repairs to the Administrator promptly.
• Remain on school property during assigned hours.
• Move furniture and equipment as required for activities and as directed by the Administrator.
• Comply with local laws for storage and disposal of trash and waste.
• Maintain safety of outdoor structures.
• Other duties as required.

About the role

As a substitute school custodian, the primary goal is to create a clean, safe, and inviting environment for students, staff, and visitors. By diligently maintaining the cleanliness of classrooms, hallways, and common areas, the custodian aims to promote a conducive atmosphere for learning and productivity. With a strong commitment to providing a welcoming space, the custodian strives to contribute positively to the overall educational experience of everyone in the school community.

What you’ll do

• Responsible for routine daily cleaning and disinfecting of our school by vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and the use of an automatic floor scrubber.
• Keeps buildings and premises, including walkways, parking lot, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
• Checks daily to ensure exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
• Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
• Cleans daily the corridors after school, and during the day when the condition requires it.
• Daily scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects bathroom floors, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains.
• Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
• Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
• Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition.
• Weekly cleans all chalkboards and marker boards.
• Promptly reports major repairs needed to the Administrator.
• Remains on the school property during assigned school hours
• Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Administrator.
• Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
• Assumes responsibility for the safe condition of outdoor structures.
• Other duties as required
