Job summary

West Michigan Academy of Environmental Science (WMAES) is seeking a substitute school custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and inviting learning environment on our 62-acre outdoor campus. You will vacuum, mop, disinfect, and help keep classrooms, hallways, and common areas orderly, while supporting a positive atmosphere for students and staff.

Ideal candidates are 18+, have a high school diploma or equivalent, reliable attendance, and the ability to work well with a diverse school community.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Demonstrate aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities.
• Ability to work effectively with school personnel and students in a diverse school community.
• Solid record of punctuality.

• Desired Requirements: Custodial experience in a school setting.
• Knowledge of and skills working with At-Risk students.

Responsibilities

• Routine cleaning and disinfecting of classrooms, hallways, and common areas.
• Keeps buildings and premises neat and clean at all times.
• Checks daily to ensure exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working during occupancy.
• Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
• Cleans daily the corridors after school and as needed.
• Disinfects bathroom floors and cleans fixtures daily.
• Washes windows on inside and outside at least twice yearly.
• Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
• Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition.
• Weekly cleans chalkboards and marker boards.
• Reports major repairs to the Administrator.
• Remains on school property during assigned hours.
• Moves furniture as directed by the Administrator.
• Complies with trash disposal procedures.
• Ensures outdoor structures are safe.
• Other duties as required

About the role

As a substitute school custodian, the primary goal is to create a clean, safe, and inviting environment for students, staff, and visitors. By diligently maintaining the cleanliness of classrooms, hallways, and common areas, the custodian aims to promote a conducive atmosphere for learning and productivity. With a strong commitment to providing a welcoming space, the custodian strives to contribute positively to the overall educational experience of everyone in the school community.

What you'll do

• Responsible for routine daily cleaning and disinfecting of our school by vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and the use of an automatic floor scrubber.
• Keeps buildings and premises, including walkways, parking lot, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
• Checks daily to ensure exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
• Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture.
• Cleans daily the corridors after school, and during the day when the condition requires it.
• Daily scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects bathroom floors, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains.
• Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
• Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
• Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition.
• Weekly cleans all chalkboards and marker boards.
• Promptly reports major repairs needed to the Administrator.
• Remains on the school property during assigned school hours
• Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the Administrator.
• Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
• Assumes responsibility for the safe condition of outdoor structures.
• Other duties as required
