Job Objective
Performs custodial duties to protect and preserve buildings, grounds, equipment, and furnishings.
Minimum Qualifications
- Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).
- A high school diploma or GED
- An acceptable score on a written pre-employment test.
- A record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment.
- Complies with drug-free workplace rules and board policies.
- Keeps current with technology and other workplace innovations that support job functions.
- Skill/experience in boiler operation, preventive maintenance, and basic repair procedures.
- Knowledge about building systems (e.g., HVAC, fire suppression, security, communication, etc.).
- Ability to read, understand, and comply with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Ability to lift ninety pounds and physically manage bulk products and heavy unwieldy equipment.
- Position is subject to a medical examination after an applicant is offered a position.
Essential Functions
- Keep supervisor and/or building principal informed about emerging issues.
- Takes the initiative to perform routine tasks independently.
- Upholds board policies and follows administrative guidelines/procedures. Promotes a professional image of the school district.
- Promotes effective communication and assistance. Uses problem-solving techniques to address questions/concerns. Refers district policy/procedure questions to administrators.
- Provides for the regular and orderly removal of trash. Washes, strips, and waxes floors. Sanitizes and re-supplies toilet rooms. Cleans furniture, fixtures, walls, and windows.
- Anticipates and replenishes consumable supplies to avoid work schedule interruptions. Helps with the receipt of deliveries. Complies with safety and environmental regulations. Ensures that supplies are labeled and stored safely.
- Cleans, moves, and arranges furnishings, supplies, and equipment as directed.
- Performs basic repairs. Avoids disrupting building activities except during emergencies.
- Deals with unexpected situations (e.g., accidents, equipment failure, etc.). Follows safety procedures to clean up injuries involving chemicals, solvents, blood, body fluids, and/or tissues. Participates in safety training.
- Monitors HVAC equipment as directed. Prepares equipment for inspections, maintenance, or shutdown.
- Performs routine groundskeeping (e.g., mowing, trimming).
- Maintains playground areas and equipment.
- Assists with snow removal as directed.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance (e.g., lubricating, replacing filters, cleaning, etc.).
- Documents injuries requiring medical attention.
- Prepares reports, records, and inventories as directed.
- Checks daily schedule for activity preparations or clean-up.
- Assists staff with urgent or unexpected situations.
- Monitors building conditions and reports issues.
- Prepares for safety and health inspections. Monitors safety equipment. Maintains clear emergency routes.
- Secures buildings and responds to emergencies.
- Assists with district security and manages visitors.
- Reports vandalism, malfunctions, and concerns.
- Takes safety precautions and works to eliminate risks.
- Maintains confidentiality and respects privacy.
- Reports suspected child abuse/neglect.
- Participates in meetings and professional development.
- Serves as a positive role model and maintains a professional appearance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
