Job Description
Position: Building Custodian

Qualifications & Required Knowledge/Skills:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Working knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment
  • Knowledge of the English language to understand operating instructions for cleaning equipment and materials and safety and accident prevention
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally
  • Ability to hear the normally spoken word at 25 feet
  • Ability to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to pick up and carry 65 pounds
  • Ability to operate cleaning and grass-cutting machines
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to attend and participate in training sessions
  • Ability to learn and practice acceptable cleaning methods
  • Ability to acquire skills in the operation of cleaning and grass-cutting machines used in the assigned facility and to be a self-starter
  • Interact positively with students, administrators, co-workers, parents, and community.
Reports to: Director of Facility Services and Building Principal

Duties:
  • Works under the supervision of the Director of Facility Services, Senior Building Custodian, and/or Administrator maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in their assigned facility
  • Performs all levels of floor care including but not limited to:
    • Sweeping/dry mopping
    • Wet mopping
    • Operation of auto scrubbers
    • Stripping/refinishing of VCT tile/terrazzo etc.
    • Operating electric and battery-powered burnishers
    • Vacuuming/extraction/shampooing of carpeting and area rugs
  • Cleans/restocks building and field restrooms using touchless cleaning systems and/or traditional tools
  • Empties trash receptacles and sorts trash/recycling from buildings
  • Washes windows, walls, and furniture
  • Maintains exterior grounds such as playgrounds, fields, and stadiums, emptying trash receptacles and policing debris and replacing mulch
  • Performs landscaping tasks such as mowing, raking, trimming as needed
  • Shovels/treats sidewalks as needed during inclement weather keeping all egress points and fire hydrants clear of ice/snow
  • Performs building maintenance including but not limited to:
    • Re-lamping fixtures
    • Painting
    • Replacing ceiling tiles
    • Changing HVAC filters
    • Replacing switch/outlet plates
    • Hanging bulletin boards, pictures etc.
    • Checking boilers/air conditioning units for proper operation
    • Makes repairs to equipment and furniture as needed
    • Resets building timers and circuit breakers as necessary
    • Regularly checks that exterior doors are functioning properly
  • Monitors school cafeterias during breakfast and lunches
  • Locks/unlocks doors & activates/deactivates alarms
  • Checks the security of the buildings and grounds
  • Moves furniture and sets up chairs/tables as required
  • Loads/unloads delivery trucks
  • Raises and lowers flags
  • Delivers packages
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by a Senior Building Custodian or Administrator
  • Must be available as needed for compensated events after hours or on weekends
  • In the event of an emergency situation (e.g.: snowstorm, flood, fire etc.) this position will report for duty
Physical demands:
  • Frequent periods spent walking, standing, bending, stretching, and climbing ladders; occasional requirement to sustain uncomfortable physical positions.
  • Occasional periods spent outside, requiring exposure to all types of weather.
  • Must lift and carry work materials, (hand tools, ladders, construction material and the like, some weighing 100 lbs.) utilizing proper body mechanics and lifting techniques.
  • Subject to interruptions to handle emergency situations.
  • Occasional exposure to chemical and biological hazards, requiring exercise of proper safety precautions.
  • Operate equipment which causes loud noise levels and some vibrations. Exercise caution when operating equipment.
Hourly Rate of Pay: $20.00/hour, affiliated employee
