Job summary

WSP is seeking an experienced Substation Structural Engineer for our Duluth, GA office, with consideration for Baton Rouge, LA. You will support electrical substation projects through design, calculations, and construction documentation, coordinating with electrical, civil, geotechnical, and construction teams.

Responsibilities include preparing calculations, construction specs, drawings, and QA/QC reviews, while mentoring junior staff and ensuring safety and quality standards are met.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post‑education experience in structural engineering, including design experience supporting electrical substation structures and foundations.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices, including steel design, concrete design, soil mechanics, and foundation design.
  • Knowledge of building codes and standards (ACI, AISC, ASCE, etc.).
  • Experience with structural analysis and/or finite element modeling software (e.g., RISA‑3D, STAAD Pro, or similar).
  • Strong attention to detail, self‑leadership, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets, and engineering software tools.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional structural engineering work supporting electrical substation projects, including steel structures, rigid bus support design, and reinforced concrete foundations.
  • Prepare structural calculations, design criteria, and calculation packages to satisfy client standards and project requirements.
  • Develop construction specifications (steel and concrete) and cost estimates for proposals and project schedules.
  • Produce and review structural drawings and fabrication‑ready documentation.
  • Coordinate with cross‑functional disciplines to support integrated substation design solutions.
  • Utilize structural analysis and finite element modeling tools to size structural systems and foundations.
  • Maintain QA/QC reviews of structural deliverables prior to submission.
  • Support Project Managers with reporting needs and technical coordination.
  • Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and support during construction.
  • Assist with scoping and execution of tasks and project workstreams.
  • Mentor and support junior team members.
