Job summary

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Substation Engineering Intern, Protection and Controls, to join our Renewables Division in Raleigh, NC.

This internship runs in Summer 2027 and offers hands-on experience with experienced professionals on renewable substation projects. You will support development of drawings, studies, and equipment specifications while learning industry standards and company procedures.

Qualifications

• Actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

• Basic knowledge of the firm’s policies and procedures.
• Basic knowledge of software relevant to the position.

Responsibilities

• As an intern, learn from experienced professionals and assist with project tasks.
• Develop project drawings: One-lines, Three-lines, AC/DC schematics, relay panel BOM, control enclosure layout, wiring diagrams, and communication schematics.
• Conduct studies and calculations: station service loads, transformer sizing, DC load sizing, CT saturation, voltage drop and cable sizing.
• Assist with procurement, vendor submittals review, and cross-discipline checks; participate in project meetings.

Required Experience

• Growing knowledge of the profession as demonstrated by involvement in related professional organizations and professional development programs

Duties and Responsibilities

As an intern at Westwood, you will work alongside experienced professionals to learn about and help with the following tasks involved in a typical renewable substation project.

Development of all project drawings

• One-lines
• Three-lines
• AC/DC schematics
• Relay panel elevation and BOM
• Control enclosure layout and BOM
• Equipment and Relay Panel Wiring diagrams
• Communication schematics and connection details

Development of studies / calculations

• Station service AC load calculations and transformer sizing
• Station battery / charger DC load calculations and sizing
• CT Saturation studies
• Voltage drop / cable sizing

Assist with development of major equipment specifications

• Review P&C deliverables completed by others
• Review equipment vendor submittals for conformance with specs and project requirements
• Cross discipline checks with other substation / service leads
• Attend internal and external project meetings as needed
• Assist Project Engineer with procurement and construction support tasks
