Job summary

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Substation Engineering Intern in Protection and Controls for the Renewables Division. This internship is for Summer 2027, offering exposure to a range of substation engineering tasks within a dynamic team.

You will work with experienced professionals on project drawings, studies, and equipment specifications to support renewable projects and client needs.

Qualifications

• Actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.
• Demonstrates willingness to accept new challenges and learn specialized field.
• Growing knowledge of profession as demonstrated by involvement in related professional organizations and professional development programs.
• Basic knowledge of the firm’s policies, practices and procedures.
• Basic knowledge of software required for position.
• Good organizational skills.
• Able to follow general directions and work with limited independence on basic computations.

Responsibilities

• Development of all project drawings: one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, relay panel elevation and BOM, control enclosure layout and BOM, wiring diagrams, and communication schematics.
• Development of studies / calculations: station service AC load calculations and transformer sizing, station battery / charger DC load calculations and sizing, CT saturation studies, voltage drop / cable sizing.
• Assist with development of major equipment specifications: review P&C deliverables, review equipment vendor submittals, cross-discipline checks, attend meetings, assist with procurement and construction support tasks.

Duties And Responsibilities

As an intern at Westwood, you will work alongside experienced professionals to learn about and help with the following tasks involved in a typical renewable substation project.

Development of all project drawings

• One-lines
• Three-lines
• AC/DC schematics
• Relay panel elevation and BOM
• Control enclosure layout and BOM
• Equipment and Relay Panel Wiring diagrams
• Communication schematics and connection details

Development of studies / calculations

• Station service AC load calculations and transformer sizing
• Station battery / charger DC load calculations and sizing
• CT Saturation studies
• Voltage drop / cable sizing

Assist with development of major equipment specifications

• Review P&C deliverables completed by others
• Review equipment vendor submittals for conformance with specs and project requirements
• Cross discipline checks with other substation / service leads
• Attend internal and external project meetings as needed
• Assist Project Engineer with procurement and construction support tasks
