Job description

Position Summary: The Substation Heavy Equipment Operator's primary role is to operate heavy machinery for the construction, maintenance, and repair of substations and related equipment.

Essential Functions:

  1. Work safely while performing construction, maintenance, and/or repair work of substation systems.
  2. Assist in transporting, installing, and removing substation structures, equipment, hardware, electrical conductors, wire, and cable.
  3. Operate various types of heavy equipment or learn to operate them, including:
  • Bucket, derrick, and boom trucks
  • Backhoes, excavators, and skid steer loaders
  • Articulating man-lifts
  • Pressure diggers
  • Trenchers
  • Track crawler loader/backhoe
  • Rough terrain telescopic forklifts
  • Read and interpret profiles, blueprints, maps, or other instructions for tasks.
  • Perform other related work as required to complete the job.
  • Maintain company vehicles in good working condition.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Capable of reading and understanding blueprints, maps, and diagrams.
  • Identify energized high and low voltage lines.
  • Basic knowledge of electricity.
  • Understand safety hazards near energized lines and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Code related to heavy equipment operation in the job's location.
  • Supply personal hand tools required by the company.
  • Provide safety-toed work boots.
  • Capable of lifting over 50 lbs.
  • Follow directions effectively.
  • Possess or obtain a Commercial Driver's License.
  • Work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
  • Willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and during emergencies, with short notice.
  • Travel up to 90% of the time.
  • Adhere to company safety rules and policies.
  • Physical Demands: The physical requirements include talking, hearing, standing, walking, using hands, reaching, exposure to fumes, mechanical parts, vibration, extreme conditions, and loud environments. The role is outdoors and physically demanding.
