Job summary

FirstEnergy Corp seeks a Transmission Substation Specialist to provide field technical services for maintenance, construction, testing and commissioning of substation equipment up to 100 kV, with support up to 500 kV. The role involves extensive field work (90%+), at company and customer sites within the local reporting area, and some regional support as needed.

The ideal candidate will have strong substation experience, knowledge of protection and control equipment, and a willingness to travel

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology or ABET-accredited related field preferred.
• Associate degree with 3 years relevant experience accepted.
• Alternatively, 5 years related substation experience if no degree.
• Experience in design, maintenance or testing of substation equipment is valued.
• Familiarity with SEL products, Enoserve RTS and Doble testing is a plus.
• Demonstrated commitment to FirstEnergy's core values.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Commitment to FirstEnergy's safety policies and procedures.
• Ability to work afterhours and travel as needed.
• Willingness to train and mentor technicians and staff.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace at substations.
• Commission new equipment up to 100 kV prior to release to system operations.
• Support commissioning of equipment up to 500 kV with oversight.
• Develop check-out guides, review test results and energization plans.
• Provide onsite technical support during preventive and corrective maintenance.
• Assist in root/cause analyses and document technical findings.
• Educate others on technical subjects and improve programs.
• Support corporate programs and organizational change efforts.
• Lead projects to completion by field work with crews and vendors.
• Travel within the FirstEnergy system, including overnight stays when necessary.
