Position Overview
The Substation Engineering Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Substation Engineering Department, including project execution, technical quality, resource planning, and team development. This role provides leadership and guidance to engineers and designers supporting transmission and distribution substation projects.
The successful candidate will manage engineering teams through all project phases, from conceptual design through construction support, while ensuring deliverables meet quality, schedule, budget, and client expectations. This position serves as a key link between engineering staff, project managers, clients, and company leadership.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and manage the Substation Engineering team, including engineers, designers, and technical staff.
- Provide technical guidance and oversight for transmission and distribution substation projects.
- Support project execution by monitoring scope, schedule, budget, and deliverable quality.
- Assign work, balance resources, and coordinate staffing across active projects.
- Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Support development and implementation of engineering procedures, standards, and quality assurance processes.
- Mentor and develop engineering staff through coaching, career development, and performance management.
- Partner with project managers to identify project risks, staffing needs, and resource requirements.
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and retention efforts for engineering personnel.
- Serve as Engineer of Record for assigned projects when appropriate and permitted by licensure.
- Collaborate with clients to resolve technical issues and ensure successful project outcomes.
- Support proposal development, technical presentations, and project pursuits.
- Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, safety, and client service.
- Coordinate with protection and controls, civil, structural, transmission, and renewable energy teams.
- Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and evolving utility standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- 8+ years of substation engineering experience supporting utility, industrial, renewable energy, or power delivery projects.
- 3+ years of engineering leadership, supervisory, or project leadership experience.
- Extensive experience with transmission and distribution substation design.
- Strong understanding of industry standards including IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility design requirements.
- Experience managing engineering resources and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities effectively.
- Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and developing engineering talent.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience working within a consulting engineering environment.
- Experience supporting utility-scale renewable energy interconnection and collector substation projects.
- Knowledge of protection and control systems, SCADA integration, and relay applications.
- Experience with EPC, utility, or owner's engineering projects.
- Multi-state PE licensure or ability to obtain additional licenses through comity.
- PMP certification.
- Experience leading distributed or remote engineering teams.
