Substation Director

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Substation Director to lead and grow our substation engineering practice.

This is a senior-level leadership position for a PE-licensed electrical engineer with 10-15+ years of substation engineering experience who can provide technical leadership, develop client relationships, mentor engineering teams, and help drive the continued growth of the business.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical background in electrical substation design and engineering, combined with the leadership and client-facing skills necessary to oversee complex projects and support business development.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the overall substation engineering practice, including technical execution, project delivery, staffing, and team development.
• Provide senior technical leadership on substation projects ranging from distribution through high-voltage transmission substations.
• Oversee the design and engineering of substation systems, including physical design, protection & controls, electrical systems, grounding, studies, and related disciplines.
• Serve as a technical resource and mentor for engineers, designers, and project managers.
• Review and approve engineering deliverables, calculations, drawings, specifications, and other technical documentation.
• Establish and maintain engineering standards, processes, and quality-control procedures.
• Work closely with Project Managers and other discipline leaders to ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to client expectations.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with utility and industrial clients.
• Participate in business development, proposals, client presentations, and pursuit strategy.
• Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and develop new business within the power delivery market.
• Assist with resource planning, hiring, team structure, and development of the substation engineering group.
• Support project pursuits and provide technical input for scopes, estimates, schedules, and staffing requirements.
• Stay current with applicable industry standards, including IEEE, ANSI, NESC, NEC, and utility-specific requirements.
• Promote a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• 10-15+ years of progressive experience in substation engineering, with increasing technical and leadership responsibility.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• Strong understanding of substation engineering and design, ideally including both physical design and protection & controls.
• Experience with medium- through high-voltage substations and utility power delivery projects.
• Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and/or managing a substation engineering group.
• Strong understanding of engineering standards, utility practices, and industry requirements.
• Proven ability to communicate effectively with clients, project managers, engineers, and senior leadership.
• Experience supporting proposals, client development, and/or business development activities.
• Strong technical writing, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

• Experience leading or growing a substation engineering department or practice.
• Experience with major utility clients and large-scale transmission and distribution programs.
• Experience with both greenfield and substation modification/rebuild projects.
• Familiarity with engineering software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, SKM, ASPEN, or similar platforms.
• Experience with utility-specific design standards and requirements.
• Previous responsibility for staffing, utilization, forecasting, budgets, or P&L.
• Established relationships within the electric utility and power delivery market.
• Experience contributing to strategic growth initiatives and developing new client accounts.
