Position Overview
The Civil Engineering Manager is responsible for providing leadership, technical oversight, and operational management for the Civil Engineering Department. This role oversees project execution, team development, quality assurance, resource planning, and continuous improvement initiatives while ensuring the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions.
The successful candidate will manage a team of civil engineers and designers supporting utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, and related infrastructure projects. This individual will work closely with project managers, discipline leaders, and executive leadership to ensure project success, support business growth, and maintain engineering excellence across the organization.
This position combines technical leadership, people management, client support, and operational oversight to drive the success of the civil engineering practice.
What You'll Do
- Lead and manage the Civil Engineering Department, ensuring successful project execution and team performance.
- Provide technical oversight for civil engineering design activities, including grading, drainage, stormwater management, erosion control, roadway design, and site development.
- Manage engineering resources, team utilization, and workload planning across multiple concurrent projects.
- Support project managers in project planning, scheduling, staffing, and risk management activities.
- Review engineering deliverables to ensure quality, accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Establish and maintain civil engineering design standards, tools, processes, and best practices.
- Mentor, coach, and develop engineers and designers at various stages of their careers.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development activities.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical, structural, substation, and project management groups.
- Support proposal development, scope definition, budgeting, and client presentations.
- Drive process improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, consistency, and project execution.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Support quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) programs across civil engineering projects.
- Ensure compliance with company standards, client requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Assist in the development and execution of departmental goals, objectives, and growth strategies.
What You Bring
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- 8+ years of civil engineering experience supporting site development, infrastructure, energy, utility, or related projects.
- 3+ years of engineering leadership, project management, or supervisory experience.
- Experience designing and managing grading, drainage, stormwater, and site development projects.
- Strong understanding of civil engineering principles, standards, and industry best practices.
- Experience reviewing engineering deliverables and overseeing QA/QC processes.
- Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong project management, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, transmission, substation, or utility infrastructure projects.
- Experience working within a consulting engineering environment.
- Proficiency with Civil 3D, AutoCAD, and related civil engineering software.
- Knowledge of hydrology, hydraulics, stormwater permitting, and erosion and sediment control design.
- Experience managing geographically distributed or remote engineering teams.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Multi‑state engineering licensure or ability to obtain additional licenses through comity.
- Experience supporting business development and client relationship management initiatives.
