Job summary

WSP is seeking an Intermediate Substation Design Engineer in Burnsville, MN to support transmission and distribution substations and related systems. You will assist with design, analysis, and documentation, under the guidance of senior engineers, for diverse utility projects.

The role emphasizes applying IEEE/NERC standards, performing electrical calculations, and producing reports and drawings. A EE degree and 1–3 years’ experience are expected, with growth opportunities in a global firm.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required.
• 1 to 3 years post-education electrical engineering experience.
• Exposure to operations and project controls for reporting.
• Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, design/build, and permitting.
• Familiarity with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.
• Familiar with codes, regulations, and record-keeping requirements.
• Analytical mindset with good judgement for decision making.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Ability to work independently or in a team to meet objectives.
• Experience with discipline-specific design software (CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP), AutoCADD electrical.
• Engineer in Training Certification preferred.
• Occasional travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data for substation components and procurement packages.
• Design support for single line and three line diagrams, layouts, grounding, and protection concepts.
• Provide technical assistance on equipment sizing, cabling, and panel design strategies.
• Support senior engineers with research and recommendations on components and field equipment.
• Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on procedures and issues.
• Develop electrical calculations for loads, sizing, voltage drop, grounding, and lighting.
• Prepare technical reports with sketches, calculations, and documentation.
• Assist with risk identification and mitigation activities in design concepts.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including project controls, procurement, and permitting.
• Contribute to work plans and field coordination for site work and permitting.
• Complete training on assigned tasks.
• Work with engineers and planners on projects with local and regional authorities.
• Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and safety policies.
