Job summary

AEP in New Albany, OH is seeking a Substation Designer to join our team. You will create, revise and maintain engineering drawings and sketches for substation projects, using AutoCAD and Inventor, while coordinating with civil, structural, and protection teams.

You’ll participate in field visits and commissioning activities, review vendor drawings, and support safety programs. Travel >50% and overtime may be required as part of this role.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in AAS CAD or related engineering technology with 1–2 years of relevant experience
• Equivalent experience without AAS: high school diploma and 6 years of electric utility drafting experience
• Must be available for overtime, travel >50%, and shift work, with ability to operate a vehicle

Responsibilities

• Create, revise and maintain engineering drawings and sketches
• Use CAD software to design substation drawings and layouts
• Review vendor drawings for standards compliance
• Coordinate with civil, structural, and protection teams
• Participate in field visits and commissioning activities

Education

AAS in drafting/CAD or related engineering technology

Engineering technology degree (civil/electrical/mechanical)

High school diploma + 6 years relevant drafting experience
