Job description

Summary

The Radiology Clinical SME serves as the clinical authority on radiology workflows across the imaging application portfolio, including PACS, RIS, and the EMR imaging modules. Acting as the bridge between radiologists, technologists, and the technical implementation and support teams, the SME translates clinical needs into system configuration and workflow requirements, validates that solutions are clinically safe and fit for purpose, and drives adoption at go-live. Job Description
Clinical SME - Radiology

This role does not own application infrastructure; it owns the clinical correctness and usability of the workflows those applications deliver.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the clinical subject-matter expert for radiology workflows — modality, reading room, worklist, and reporting — across PACS, RIS, and EMR imaging modules.
  • Translate radiologist and technologist needs into clear, testable workflow and configuration requirements for the build and support teams.
  • Design and validate clinical workflows, including hanging protocols, reading worklists, structured reporting templates, and modality-to-PACS routing rules.
  • Lead clinical validation and user-acceptance testing, confirming that configurations are clinically accurate, safe, and aligned to how staff work.
  • Provide clinical guidance during go-live cutovers — anticipating workflow impacts, supporting at-the-elbow adoption, and triggering clinical issues alongside the support team.
  • Partner with application support on incident triage by providing clinical context and prioritization, especially where an issue affects patient care or reporting turnaround.
  • Define and review clinical downtime and recovery workflows so radiology can continue to operate safely during planned and unplanned outages.
  • Develop training materials, super-user content, and workflow documentation, and deliver clinical training to radiologists, technologists, and front-desk staff.
  • Represent the clinical perspective in change advisory, upgrade planning, and new-application evaluations, assessing clinical impact before changes are approved.
  • Gather and prioritize clinical feedback to drive continuous workflow optimization and reduce friction for clinical staff.
Clinical Domain Expertise
  • Deep working knowledge of radiology modalities and their workflows: CR/DR, CT, MR, ultrasound, mammography, interventional radiology, and nuclear medicine / PET.
  • Strong understanding of the end-to-end imaging workflow: order entry, scheduling, exam acquisition, image routing, reading/interpretation, structured reporting, and result distribution.
  • Familiarity with radiologist reading-room needs — hanging protocols, prior comparison, multi-monitor diagnostic display, and voice-recognition reporting.
  • Awareness of imaging quality, dose, and accreditation considerations (e.g., ACR) as they affect workflow and configuration.
Experience & Skills
  • 7+ years of clinical experience in diagnostic radiology, with a background as a registered technologist, radiology informaticist, or equivalent clinical role.
  • ARRT registration (or equivalent) and any required state licensure.
  • Hands-on experience with PACS and RIS from a clinical workflow and configuration perspective, including Merge PACS or comparable enterprise platforms.
  • Practical understanding of DICOM, HL7, and IHE radiology profiles (e.g., SWF, XDS-I) as they shape clinical workflow and interoperability.
  • Experience with EMR imaging workflows and integration, such as Epic (Radiant) and/or Cerner.
  • Proven ability to lead clinical validation, user-acceptance testing, and go-live adoption activities.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to translate fluently between clinical and technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of healthcare compliance requirements, including HIPAA, HITRUST, and SOC 2.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CIIP (Certified Imaging Informatics Professional) certification.
  • Advanced or cross-modality registries (e.g., CT, MR, mammography, vascular-interventional).
  • Experience supporting large-scale, multi-site PACS modernization or go-live programs and hypercare operations.
  • Vendor / product certifications relevant to the supported PACS and RIS platforms.
