Job summary

Mercy-University is seeking a Peer Tutor to provide tutoring and academic support to fellow students. The ideal candidate will model good student practices, help peers develop time management skills, and lead group study sessions.

This role encourages engagement with various academic resources to foster confidence and self-reliance among students. Responsibilities include facilitating learning, maintaining communication with staff, and accurate logging of work hours.

Qualifications

  • Must demonstrate an ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with students and instructors.
  • Must demonstrate mastery of the specific content area in which they will tutor.
  • Must provide names of two Mercy University faculty members for letters of support.
  • All Peer Tutors must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 and an average of B+ or better.

May conduct and lead group study and tutoring sessions in a variety of formats, such as Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Structured Learning Assistance (SLA). In this role, they encourage student success through engagement with a variety of academic resources.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

A. Administrative/Technical/Service
  • Provide high-quality individual and small group tutoring sessions in approved subjects.
  • Facilitate learning to assist the student to become a successful, independent learner.
  • Facilitate student mastery of concepts or applications of a specific course of study as presented by the course instructor.
  • Integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.
  • As a member of the CAEI team, a Peer Tutor is expected to maintain ongoing professional communication with the Learning Support Manager and CAEI administrative staff.
  • Encourage students to develop a systematic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses.
  • Meet with Learning Support Manager and CAEI administrative staff to plan appropriate academic support for students.
  • Record student data to the CAEI with accuracy and confidentiality and turn in such data at the conclusion of every shift.
  • Accurately log work hours on Banner time sheets in Mercy Connect and submit them on time.
  • Participate in professional development offerings.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned consistent with the position of Peer Tutor.

  • Initiates actions that foster acceptance of organizational change and that build commitment to Department and university’s objectives.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in the acceptance and completion of work assignments.
  • Is punctual and maintains a satisfactory attendance record. Is appropriately attired for the office.
  • Develops and maintains a cooperative, friendly and mutually supportive work environment for all staff. Uses resources wisely and effectively.
  • Collaborates and cooperates with other managers and departments.
  • Demonstrating Initiative: Identifies and initiates actions independently to support the vision, mission and objectives, and to resolve or avoid problems.
  • Effective in taking action without being told. Takes initiative in troubleshooting and completing tasks.
C. Educational/Professional Development
  • Identifies learning strengths and needs; seeks to learn and continuously develop self by utilizing learning resources.
  • Provides training for staff as appropriate.
D. Communication/Relationships
  • Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with clients, staff, and other members of the Mercy University community.
  • Answers telephones and emails in an appropriate, professional manner, and resolves problems in a reasonable time frame.
E. Policies and Procedures Compliance
  • Complies with policies and procedures of the Department and the University, including but not limited to the University’s Code of Conduct.
  • Accurately logs work hours on Banner time sheets in Mercy Connect and submits them on time.
  • Identifies and reports gaps in policies and procedures to management.
  • Complies with all required training.
  • A Peer Tutor employed by Mercy University in any other capacity cannot work at the CAEI during times that overlap with their other positions, and while on duty, should only perform tasks related to their CAEI position.
Required Skills & Experience
  • A Peer Tutor must demonstrate an ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with students and instructors.
  • Must demonstrate mastery of the specific content area or a related subject area in which he or she will tutor.
  • Must provide names of two Mercy University faculty members who will provide letters of support on their behalf.
  • All Peer Tutors must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 and an average of B+ or better in subjects in which they tutor.
