Indiana University of Pennsylvania seeks a graduate research assistant to join an interdisciplinary research team studying Four Voices in Healthcare: A Narrative Medicine Framework for Interprofessional and Intercultural Education. This grant funded project aims to strengthen empathy, cultural competency, and interprofessional communication in healthcare education.

Qualifications

• Graduate student at IUP in health sciences, public health, nursing or related field.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Experience with research methods or willingness to develop under mentorship.
• Familiarity with SPSS or NVivo preferred but not required.
• Interest in healthcare education, narrative medicine, interprofessional practice or medical humanities.
• Ability to commit across Fall 2026 through Spring/Summer 2027 with possible extension.

Responsibilities

• Assist with quasi-experimental mixed-methods classroom study, including data collection, organization, and de-identification.
• Support the training and calibration of undergraduate student raters.
• Conduct statistical analyses in SPSS (descriptive and inferential) under faculty mentorship.
• Contribute to qualitative coding of reflective writing and interview transcripts under faculty mentorship.
• Assist with longitudinal follow-up data collection (Spring 2027), including scheduling and supporting semi-structured interviews.
• Support manuscript preparation for peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
• Contribute to the development of materials for larger federal and foundation grant applications.

This grant funded project examines how storytelling, reflective writing, and theatrical simulation can strengthen empathy, cultural competency, and interprofessional communication in healthcare education. This role designed for a graduate student seeking sustained mentorship, publication opportunities, and meaningful involvement in a research project.

• Current IUP graduate student in health sciences, public health, nursing or a related field
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Coursework or experience in research methods and/or willingness to develop new methodological skills with mentorship
• Familiarity with SPSS, NVivo, or similar tools preferred but not required
• Interest in healthcare education, narrative medicine, interprofessional practice, or medical humanities
• Ability to commit to the position across multiple semesters (Fall 2026 through Spring/Summer 2027, with possible extension)
