Job summary

Abraxas Youth and Family Services in South Mountain, PA, is seeking a Student Support Specialist to work with students alongside a certified teacher, providing 1:1 and small-group academic support in reading, math and core subjects, and reinforcing lessons to help students stay on track.

The role emphasizes a safe, structured classroom and mentorship, with paid training and opportunities for career growth within a values-driven organization. No experience required for many positions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in any subject.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• PA Teaching Certification (Public School Certification or Private Academic School Certification), or ability to work under and maintain an emergency permit.
• Experience using effective behavior management techniques in relating to children to encourage participation and positive relationships and demonstrates enthusiasm in lessons.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

As a Student Support Specialist you will:

• Work alongside a certified Teacher and play a key role in helping students stay on track academically

Qualifications

Education and Experience Required:

• Bachelor's Degree in any subject

Education and Experience Preferred:

• Interest in education, youth development, or human services
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to stay calm, structured, and supportive in a classroom setting
• PA Teaching Certification (Public School Certification (public I or II) or Private Academic School Certification), or ability to work under and maintain an emergency permit.
• Experience using effective behavior management techniques in relating to children to encourage participation and positive relationships and demonstrates enthusiasm in lessons.

Other Qualifications:

• At least twenty-one (21) years of age
• Must have a valid Driver's License
• Physical exam that includes TB and drug testing.
• Must pass both federal and state background checks which screen for crimes including, but not limited to drug related crimes, violent crimes, sexual abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, and repeated misdemeanors.
• Satisfactory completion of background screening and applicable pre-employment checks, including but not limited to employment and/or personal reference and driving records.
• Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.

Schedule

• Monday-Friday, year-round
