An innovative education technology platform is seeking compassionate and skilled mental health professionals to review student reflections. This role involves using a specialized tool to assess reflections for potential concerns, ensuring that students receive necessary support. As part of a small, dedicated team, you will contribute to improving student well-being and academic outcomes in under-resourced communities. This flexible, virtual position offers an opportunity to make a significant impact while working part-time during the school year. Join a mission-driven organization committed to fostering emotional and academic health among students.
Sown To Grow (STG) is a K12 education technology platform that empowers schools to improve student social, emotional, and academic health through an easy and engaging reflection and feedback process. In a short weekly routine, students check-in emotionally and reflect on the strategies that are working best for them (or new ones to try). They start with a focus on emotional well-being and expand to academic goal-setting over time. Teachers, principals, and counselors understand real-time student emotions with AI-driven insights, and proactively support student needs.
STG has received seed funding from highly selective, innovative funds including the National Science Foundation, US Department of Education, NewSchools Venture Fund, Imagine K12 (now Y Combinator Edtech), Impact Assets, Jane VC, Digital Promise and others. The company currently serves schools in 40 states and has large-scale contracts with organizations such as Metro Nashville Public Schools (TN), Oakland Unified School District (CA), KIPP, and more.
Sometimes, students write reflections that may need an intervention outside of Sown To Grow. There are several lines of defense to catch these reflections, including teachers consistently reading student responses. As an additional layer, Sown To Grow has built an alert system that notifies teachers and specified school administrators about concerning student reflections that may need an intervention. This system uses artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) to identify language related to self-harm, death of a loved one, depression/anxiety, and other traumatic events. This system flags about 1% of reflections for a thoughtful human review before sending out alerts to the concerned teachers, admins and counselors. We are looking to hire highly skilled, thoughtful and inspired mental health professionals to join us in this critical high impact task of human review as we scale our product across nation-wide schools and districts.
The majority of STG's school and district partners serve predominantly under-resourced communities. STG is solving high impact and highly relevant problems using students' academic and social-emotional reflections, making the work technically challenging, ethically nuanced, and fundamentally complex.
We are a small, nimble team that is inspired to make a difference in the world while building a successful business. Before starting Sown To Grow, our founding team spent several years working in both the private sector and schools/districts. We care deeply about building a product that positively impacts student outcomes and makes Educators' lives easier.
This position is for masters students of social work or similar degree in the mental health field. Clinicians in Training - Student Reflection Reviewers will be with STG for the school year 2025-26 for flexible and virtual 2 to 4 hours a week. This position will start in August 2025 and end in May 2026 under the leadership of the Director of Data Science & Machine Learning.
