Job summary

Oregon State University is seeking three part-time Student Ranch Technicians at the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center in Union, Oregon for the Union Experiment Station. You will perform routine to complex tasks in support of research and ranch operations, including care of animal facilities, cleaning pens, dispensing feed, fence maintenance, assisting with calving, and data recording.

Eligible applicants must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university

Job Description:

This recruitment will be used to fill three part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Ranch Technician for the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center at the Union Experiment Station in Union, Oregon for Oregon State University (OSU).

Position Duties:
  • - Performs routine to complex technical or specialized tasks in support of research and ranch operations
  • - May include care and maintenance of animal facilities
  • - Cleaning pens
  • - Dispensing feed
  • - Fence maintenance/repair
  • - Assist with calving
  • - Recording cow/calf data and other related tasks

  • - Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • - Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • - Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
  • - Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
  • - Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
  • - Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
  • - Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
  • *International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Required Qualifications:

Training in calving techniques & animal care will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous farm/ranch experience is preferred.

Working Conditions/Schedule:
  • Located six hours from Corvallis
  • Work is performed in barns and outdoors in various locations, off main campus.
  • May have exposure to noxious odors, loud noises, and machinery.
  • May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
  • May maneuver up to 50 lbs. and may be required to stoop, bend and kneel on hard floors as necessary.
  • Flexible hours as needed to complete experiments/projects.
