Job summary

Job description

Department: AgCEDS - Agricultural Cyber Ecosystem & Data Services, College of Agricultural Sciences

Seeking a part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Data & System Technician for AgCEDS (Agricultural Cyber Ecosystem & Data Services) within the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU).

AgCEDS (Agricultural Cyber Ecosystem & Data Services) is a small, fast-moving technology team inside OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences, working on real research problems - from machine learning models that identify pests and birds in the field, to cloud-connected sensor networks, to the data pipelines that support faculty research across the state. As a student technician, you’ll work directly on live projects alongside our technical staff, gaining hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, data systems, and applied technology in an agricultural research setting - not simulations or coursework exercises.

Position Duties

• 40%: Clean, organize, and maintain research data pipelines and databases used across AgCEDS projects (e.g., REDCap-based sensory research data). Assist with data entry, quality checks, and documentation for ongoing field research projects.
• 30%: Help build and maintain simple web tools and dashboards that faculty researchers use to view and manage project data.
• 20%: Support basic cloud infrastructure monitoring and maintenance for AgCEDS-hosted applications and dashboards. Provide general technical support to the AgCEDS team on small coding, automation, and IT tasks as assigned.
• 10%: Document processes and maintain clear records of project configurations and troubleshooting steps. Collaborate with AgCEDS staff and faculty partners to understand data and technology needs.

• Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
• Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.
• Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard.
• High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program.
• Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term.
• Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*.
• Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term.
• Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*.

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS) and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Required Qualifications: Current OSU student in good academic standing, meeting OSU’s minimum enrollment requirements for student employment (see Minimum Qualifications above). Basic proficiency with at least one programming or scripting language (e.g., Python, JavaScript, SQL), through coursework or personal projects. Comfortable working with spreadsheets and databases, and learning new software tools. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow data-handling procedures accurately. Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years. OSU will conduct a review of the National Sex Offender Public website prior to hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Coursework or project experience in computer science, data science, agricultural technology, or a related field.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure), REDCap, or basic web development (HTML/CSS/JavaScript).
• Interest in agriculture, environmental science, or ag-tech applications.
• Prior experience with Git or other version control tools.

Working Conditions / Schedule

Primarily an on-campus office environment in Corvallis. Flexible scheduling around class hours, up to 24 hours per week. No regular travel required.
