Job summary

UNC Health is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for the Youth Behavioral Health Cardinal Unit in Butner, NC. This temporary full-time position supports adolescent psychiatric care with a rotating day/night schedule and a 36-hour work week.

As a prelicensure nursing student, you will work with an RN partner under supervision, gaining hands-on experience in a hospital setting. Required: High school diploma or GED, enrollment in a nursing program, and BLS certification.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I with NC DHHS; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes to RN or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provide routine nursing care: vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, feeding and hygiene assistance.
• Support activities of daily living and assist with ambulation and comfort measures.
• Assist with examinations, procedures, and equipment as needed.
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and support patient safety initiatives.
