ISO New England is the independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.
Help keep the lights on while shaping the future of New England’s grid. Join ISO New England for a hands-on PhD internship where you’ll use optimization, programming, and power systems analysis to improve resource adequacy assessments—critical studies that help ensure the region has enough electricity when it matters most.
ISO New England is one of the most pivotal energy companies you’ve probably never heard of. Our job is to oversee the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six-states of New England and to administer the region’s $10+ billion “stock exchange” for buying and selling of wholesale electricity. Our work ensures that over 14 million people can reliably turn their lights on and complete their jobs, take care of their families, and live in comfort with convenience.
The Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) department engages in both long-term research projects and near-term design/process improvements. The department consists of experts in three topic areas: power systems, simulations, and markets. In all projects, the goal of the department is to provide innovative and practical solutions to current and emerging questions for ISO New England.
You’ll work with ISO New England’s in-house Probabilistic Evaluation Tool for Resource Adequacy (PETRA) to support capacity requirement analysis and resource accreditation studies.
You’ll help enhance how storage resources, uncertainty correlations, and fuel inventory are represented in resource adequacy models—applying data analytics, optimization, and programming to real-world grid reliability questions.
Along the way, you’ll gain practical experience with power system modeling, probabilistic analysis, data-driven reliability assessment, and technical problem solving in a regional transmission organization environment.
Your work will help ISO New England improve the tools and modeling approaches used to evaluate whether the region has sufficient resources to meet future electricity demand. By strengthening resource adequacy assessments, you’ll contribute to more informed planning decisions and support a reliable, resilient grid as energy storage, renewable resources, fuel availability, and demand patterns continue to evolve.
