Job summary

Basin Electric Power Cooperative is seeking a Student Intern in Environmental Engineering for the 2027 summer program at the Beulah, ND site. The role provides hands-on experience, supporting the Environmental Engineering Department with field and office tasks during May–August 2027.

The position focuses on data collection, exposure to regulatory requirements, report drafting, and collaboration across teams.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in or recently completed a four-year ABET-accredited engineering program (sophomore year or later).
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.
• Hold a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Assist in collecting groundwater monitoring samples or other environmental samples.
• Assist in data entry or analysis of environmental sampling results and other programs.
• Provide regular inspections of Environmental Department facilities, scheduled weekly or monthly as required.
• Provide updates to and develop reports based on Environmental Department drawings and records, as requested.
• Assist in monitoring environmental compliance of the facility, including spill investigation and response assistance.
• Assist with developing and drafting regular environmental monthly, quarterly, or annual reports, as assigned.

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is located at our Dakota Gasification Company in Beulah, ND.
This position is for the summer months of 2027 (approximately May 17, 2027 through August 20, 2027).
This temporary position provides project-based assistance to the Environmental Engineering Department. It is designed to provide real-world experience to students pursuing an engineering degree. The incumbent will gain exposure to Cooperative operations and practices while supporting teams with hands-on tasks and assignments appropriate to their field of study.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Assist in collecting groundwater monitoring samples or other environmental samples.
• Assist in data entry or analysis of environmental sampling results and other programs.
• Provide regular inspections of Environmental Department facilities, scheduled weekly or monthly as required.
• Provide updates to and develop reports based on Environmental Department drawings and records, as requested.
• Assist in monitoring environmental compliance of the facility, including spill investigation and response assistance.
• Assist in developing and drafting regular environmental monthly, quarterly, or annual reports, as assigned.
• Learn about environmental regulations and laws.
• Assist with other company functions, such as DGC Family Night coordination.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• At least 18 years of age.
• Enrolled in or recently completed a four-year EAC/ABET-accredited engineering program (sophomore year or later).
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.
• Hold a valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Previous internship or relevant work experience.
• Additional certifications or coursework in field of study.
  

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Must meet the physical and environmental demands appropriate to the internship area. These may include prolonged standing or sitting, lifting up to 50 pounds, field work, confined spaces, working at heights, or exposure to chemicals or noise. Specific demands are noted in individual department postings.
