Job summary

Basin Electric Power Cooperative in Beulah, ND, offers a Student Intern - E&I Maintenance position for the summer of 2027 (May 17 – August 20). This temporary role supports maintenance and repair of plant electrical and instrumentation equipment under supervision.

Responsibilities include troubleshooting, installation/repair of DCS, PLCs, temperature and vibration monitoring, VFDs, instrumentation, and electrical systems, with safety as a priority.

Qualifications

• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Enrolled as a full-time student in a two-year Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation Technology program with two semesters completed, or recent graduate within past 12 months.
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.
• Hold a valid driver’s license.
• Transcript required at time of application.

Responsibilities

• Assist with maintenance and repair of plant electrical and instrumentation equipment in a safe, logical, and efficient manner.
• Assist with basic troubleshooting and installation/repair/maintenance of Distributive Control System, PLCs, temperature and vibration monitoring, VFDs, instrumentation, electrical systems, and control valves.
• Support the annual Family Night event (setup, participation, and cleanup).
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

This position is at our Dakota Gasification Company location in Beulah, ND.
This position is for the summer months of 2027 (approximately May 17, 2027 through August 20, 2027).
This is a temporary position that performs basic duties related to the repair and maintenance of plant electrical and instrumentation equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Assist with the maintenance and repair of plant electrical and instrumentation equipment in a safe, logical, and efficient manner, in compliance with safety regulations.
• Assist with basic troubleshooting and assist in the installation/repair/maintenance of the following:
• Distributive Control System
• Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s)
• Temperature and vibration monitoring equipment
• Variable Frequency Drives
• Instrumentation
• Electrical systems, i.e. conduit, lighting, enclosures, etc.
• Control Valves
• Support the annual Family Night event, including setup, participation, and cleanup, as part of departmental responsibilities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Be enrolled as a full-time student two-year Electrical, Electronics, or Instrumentation Technology program with two semesters completed, or recent graduate (within the past 12 months).
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Requires constant walking, hand coordination, and standing, occasional stooping/bending, climbing stairs and ladders, kneeling, occasional hand grip of 45 pounds, lifting and carrying up to 55 pounds, reaching above and below shoulder level; sitting, lifting 50 pounds from knee to shoulder high, crawling, pushing and pulling up to 30 pounds, and use of keyboard/computer and test equipment. Requires continuous use of tools and occasional turning of valves and use of foot controls. Over 45% of the incumbent’s shift is spent outdoors. This position is continuously exposed to noise; frequently exposed to dirt, dust, chemicals, extreme heat and cold; and occasionally exposed to vibration, poor ventilation and confined areas. Will be required to wear dust masks, respirators and full face Scott Air Paks when necessary. Frequently requires working in high climbing areas on grating, ladders, scaffolding and other areas requiring use of safety equipment and may involve work at heights from 10 to 150 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards. Requires good finger dexterity, good binocular vision, accurate color vision and the ability to speak. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must have the ability to analyze data and reports, implement recommendations and follow verbal and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively with others and present information in a clear, concise manner.
