Job summary

Sul Ross State University’s Borderlands Research Institute is seeking a Student Assistant-Equipment Maintenance Helper for the 2026-2027 period in Alpine, TX. The role supports equipment upkeep, fleet maintenance, and field gear to assist research operations.

Responsibilities include basic maintenance on fleet vehicles and OHVs, logging service records, coordinating outsourced repairs, and ensuring equipment is clean and ready for use by faculty and students. A valid driver's license is required.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree at Sul Ross State University as part of the eligibility.
• Must be willing to operate equipment and communicate with staff.

Responsibilities

• Communicate fleet and equipment maintenance and repair needs to BRI administrative staff.
• Perform minor maintenance and repair on BRI fleet, including vehicles, OHVs, and trailers.
• Coordinate with BRI staff to outsource fleet maintenance and repairs as needed.
• Assist with maintenance and repair of field equipment in support of research and operations.
• Assist with upkeep and cleanliness of storage barn and shop area.
• Ensure fleet maintenance and repair logs are updated and accurate.
• Ensure all vehicle and trailer registrations are up to date.
• Ensure all vehicles are clean upon return.
• Assist with periodic cleaning and organization of on-board essentials of vehicles.
• Periodically start and idle ATVs/UTVs to ensure in good condition.
• Other duties as assigned.
