Job summary

MacKay & Somps is seeking a Civil Engineering student for the Summer 2026 Student Engineer role to support land development and public infrastructure projects across Northern California. You'll work closely with engineers, designers, and surveyors to gain hands-on experience from concept through construction.

Under the guidance of project engineers and CAD designers, you will prepare plans, assist with site grading, hydrology calculations, and quantity take-offs, while learning AutoCAD Civil 3D

Qualifications

• Pursuing a B.S. in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• Completed or taking coursework in site design, hydrology, transportation, or stormwater systems.
• Familiar with AutoCAD Civil 3D or interest to learn it.
• Strong communication, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn.

Responsibilities

• Prepare plans, exhibits, and figures for land development and public infrastructure projects.
• Assist with grading, utility, stormwater, and street design.
• Support hydrology and hydraulic calculations.
• Perform quantity take-offs, basic cost estimating, and data entry.
• Learn to use design software including AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office tools.

While we are actively interviewing candidates for the Summer 2026 Student Engineer role, we anticipate offers being extended around February of 2027 with a June 2027 start date. Official start date to be confirmed with the successful candidate.

Student Engineers work under the direction ofProject Engineers,Project Managers, andCAD Designers, providing design and production support on a variety of projects, including:

• Preparing plans, exhibits, and figures forland developmentandpublic infrastructureprojects
• Assisting withgrading, utility, stormwater, and street design
• Supportinghydrology and hydraulic calculations
• Performing quantity take-offs, basic cost estimating, and data entry

This role offers the opportunity to build a strong technical foundation while gaining exposure to real-world project development from concept through construction.

We are looking for candidates who:

• - Are currently pursuing aB.S. in Civil Engineering(or related field) from anABET-accredited university
• - Have completed (or are currently taking) coursework insite design, hydrology, transportation, or stormwater systems
• - Have exposure to or an interest in learningAutoCAD Civil 3D
• - Demonstratestrong communication skills,attention to detail, and a desire to learn
• - Thrive in ateam-oriented, client-driven work environment
• - AnEngineer-In-Training (EIT)certification or intent to pursue one is a plus
• - Software used in this role may include AutoCAD Civil3D, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, XP-Storm, and WaterCAD.
