Job summary

MacKay & Somps Civil Engineers, Inc. in Northern California seeks a Student Engineer to apply classroom knowledge to real projects under PEs and CAD designers. You will assist with land development, public infrastructure, and hydrology calculations, gaining hands-on design experience.

Eligible candidates are pursuing a B.S. in Civil Engineering (ABET-accredited) and show strong communication, detail orientation, and teamwork.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a B.S. in Civil Engineering (ABET-accredited).
  • Completed coursework in site design, hydrology, transportation, or stormwater systems.
  • Exposure to or interest in learning AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Strong communication, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Engineers, Project Managers, and CAD Designers on design tasks.
  • Prepare plans, exhibits, and figures for land development and public infrastructure.
  • Support grading, utility, stormwater, and street design and hydrology calculations.
  • Perform quantity take-offs, basic cost estimating, and data entry.
  • Learn to use AutoCAD Civil3D and Microsoft Office tools.

Are you a civil engineering student eager to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to real-world projects? As aStudent EngineeratMacKay & Somps, you’ll gain hands-on experience supporting land development and public infrastructure efforts across Northern California. You’ll work side by side with professional engineers, designers, and surveyors, helping bring communities to life through thoughtful, well-executed design. This is a great opportunity to explore career paths incivil engineering, strengthen your technical skills, and contribute to meaningful projects in a supportive and team-oriented environment.

While we are actively interviewing candidates for the Summer 2026 Student Engineer role, we anticipate offers being extended around February of 2027 with a June 2027 start date. Official start date to be confirmed with the successful candidate.

Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Student Engineers work under the direction ofProject Engineers,Project Managers, andCAD Designers, providing design and production support on a variety of projects, including:

  • Preparing plans, exhibits, and figures forland developmentandpublic infrastructureprojects
  • Assisting withgrading, utility, stormwater, and street design
  • Supportinghydrology and hydraulic calculations
  • Performing quantity take-offs, basic cost estimating, and data entry
  • Learning to use design software includingAutoCAD Civil 3Dand Microsoft Office tools

This role offers the opportunity to build a strong technical foundation while gaining exposure to real-world project development from concept through construction.

We are looking for candidates who:
  • - Are currently pursuing aB.S. in Civil Engineering(or related field) from anABET-accredited university
  • - Have completed (or are currently taking) coursework insite design, hydrology, transportation, or stormwater systems
  • - Have exposure to or an interest in learningAutoCAD Civil 3D
  • - Demonstratestrong communication skills,attention to detail, and a desire to learn
  • - Thrive in ateam-oriented, client-driven work environment
  • - AnEngineer-In-Training (EIT)certification or intent to pursue one is a plus
  • - Software used in this role may include AutoCAD Civil3D, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, XP-Storm, and WaterCAD.
