Position Summary
Kellogg Community College (KCC) and the Athletics Department are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Student-Athlete Support Services Coach. Located in Battle Creek, Michigan, KCC is a comprehensive, student-centered institution committed to providing accessible, high-quality education to a diverse community of learners. In addition to the main campus in Battle Creek, KCC serves students through regional centers in Coldwater, Hastings, and Albion, as well as an industrial trades center in the Fort Custer area of Battle Creek.

The Student-Athlete Support Services Coach provides services related to student-athlete enrollment, persistence, retention, and graduation. The SASS coach works closely with faculty, academic advisors, athletic coaches, and other campus departments to ensure that student-athletes have the resources and support necessary to succeed both academically and athletically.

This role emphasizes comprehensive academic, personal, and professional support to student-athletes, ensuring their success both in competition and in the classroom. This role aims to assist student-athletes in balancing the demands of their academic, athletic, and personal responsibilities by offering resources, guidance, and services tailored to their unique needs.

This position is intended to serve as a coach for one of KCC's women's team sports, with current institutional priorities being Basketball, Soccer, or Volleyball. The individual selected will join the current coaching staff supporting women's athletics and may serve in any level of coaching capacity-head coach, assistant coach, or other supporting role-based on experience, team needs, and departmental priorities.

Kellogg Community College is located in Battle Creek, Michigan, a community of approximately 54,000 people. Leisure activities, natural resources and learning opportunities provide a foundation for residents. Located along the I-94 interstate, Battle Creek is within 30 minutes of Kalamazoo, 60 minutes of Lansing and Grand Rapids and within three hours of Detroit, Chicago and Indianapolis.

Physical Demands
The job responsibilities are performed in an office area and presentation venues. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 - 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and, may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Please attach unofficial transcript(s) showing coursework completed and degree conferred.
  2. Two or more (2+) years of related experience.
  3. Coaching experience in women's team sports at secondary education level or higher, specifically Basketball, Soccer, and/or Volleyball.
  4. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  5. Experience working with diverse population.
  6. Ability to independently travel in and around the region.
  7. Ability to engage with community stakeholders positively and professionally, on and off campus.
  8. Ability to earn CPR certification.


Preferred but not Required
  1. Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Collegiate coaching experience.
  3. Demonstrated success as head coach at the collegiate level in women's team sports, ideally Basketball, Soccer, and/or Volleyball.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the standards and requirements for NJCAA and Title IX regulations.
  5. Experience working at a Community College.
  6. Current CPR certification.


Proposed Salary
According to the Kellogg Community College Hay Administrative Compensation program, the 2024-2025 annual salary range for a Professional 1 position, $48,823 to $57,437 to start.

Job Duties

Essential Function: STUDENT-ATHLETE SUPPORT SERVICES

Description:
  • Assist student-athletes with navigating the enrollment process:
    • Develop effective communication with campus partners including but not limited to academic advising, financial aid, and the Registrar's Office.
    • Deliver services directly to students such as academic advising, as appropriate.


  • Proficient in NJCAA eligibility standards and assist student-athletes with meeting these standards in relation to registration for classes, schedule adjustments, and academic progress.
  • Provide mentorship and academic advising for student-athletes, ensuring they balance academics and athletics successfully with intent to persist, retain, and achieve degree completion.
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote academic success, including study skills workshops, tutoring resources, and time management support.
  • Serve as a liaison between student-athletes, faculty, and athletic department staff to address academic concerns and support retention efforts.
  • Monitor the well-being of student-athletes and connect them with necessary support services.


Essential Function: TEAM & COACHING DEVELOPMENT

Description:
  • Work with student-athletes to improve their personal and teamwork skills in a competitive intercollegiate setting.
  • Initiate various aspects of women's team sports programs, such as recruiting operations, campus visits, scheduling opponents, scholarship and budget oversight, training and coaching team members, skill development, strength and conditioning, team and individual discipline, and technical expertise of their sport.
  • Abide by the rules and regulations of women's team sports established by KCC, the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
  • Foster personal and professional growth in student-athletes, emphasizing leadership, discipline, sportsmanship, and community engagement.
  • Encourage and support athletes in pursuing academic and athletic excellence, preparing them for both collegiate competition and post-collegiate career paths.
  • Promote a holistic approach to athletic development, including physical conditioning, resilience, and emotional well-being.
  • Assist in evaluating athlete performance, providing constructive feedback, and setting both individual and team goals.


Essential Function: STUDENT & INSTITUTIONAL OUTCOMES

Description:
  • Create and facilitate programs aimed at improving the retention of student-athletes, addressing factors such as academic struggles, social integration, and time management.
  • Track and analyze student-athlete retention data, identifying trends and making recommendations to improve persistence to graduation.
  • Work with student-athletes to set clear academic goals and graduation plans, helping them stay on track for graduation.
  • Provide direction and mentorship to student-athletes for specific issues impacting academic success such as academic performance, time management, goal setting, learning and study strategies, note taking, and test taking.
  • Coordinate study tables and connect students to tutoring resources. Foster student accountability, self-advocacy, self-awareness, and effective use of communication.
  • Work with head coaches to monitor student progress and utilize various retention strategies as needed to ensure student success.
  • Maintain and track student-athlete eligibility, performance metrics, and other necessary documentation.
  • Contribute to program evaluation and improvement through feedback from players, colleagues, and performance assessments.


Essential Function: ADMINISTRATION & OVERSIGHT

Description:
  • Assist with monitoring the Miller Building during regular building hours, evenings and weekends, and events as needed.
  • Organize building schedule for all areas that schedule specific times for class, practice meetings and other needs.
  • Oversee facility usage requests.
  • Facilitate communication between Lifelong Learning and the coaching staff regarding youth programming, camps, and clinics. Facilitate communication of all athletic community service projects and other special events.
  • Oversee officials' pay for all athletic programs when needed.
  • Follow and/or direct emergency action plans per building, Athletics department, and/or college protocol.
  • As a backup or in support of department operations, administer responsibilities as needed, including but are not limited to:
    • Process check request and department reimbursements,
    • Prepare payroll authorization forms for department,
    • Oversee purchase requisitions for programs and Miller Building,
    • Monitor phones,
    • Provide customer service, and/or
    • Arrange meetings, programs, and events including facilities, catering, and invitations; facilitate event evaluation process.
